March 12, 1931 to August 19, 2014
We say a loving farewell to a beautiful soul who has embarked on her next journey. Patricia (Pat) was born in Stevenson, B.C and spent her early years living on her grandparent’s farm. The family moved to North Vancouver during her teens. Pat completed her nursing training at the Vancouver General Hospital and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, where she served for four years as an Acting Flying Officer in the Medical Division. Pat was swept off her feet by a prairie boy and relocated to Saskatchewan in 1961, when she married Harvey Nicolle. She grew to love the wide open landscape and spectacular skies of her adopted home. Pat and Harvey raised a family of five children in Outlook and Delisle, Sask., where they owned and operated a Macleod’s Hardware store for many years. Pat was a lifelong volunteer and community activist. She was involved in the local United Church, the local library; was a Cub Scout leader for many years and volunteered as a Medical First Responder with the local ambulance. She took up the piano as an adult and delighted in the experience of making her own music. Pat loved spending summers fishing, beach combing and swimming at the family cabin on Lake Diefenbaker. Pat continued nursing and finished her professional career at the Oliver Lodge Nursing Home in Saskatoon. In later years, she was an active member of The Order of the Eastern Star and cultivated many pastimes including dancing, gardening, oil painting, crafting, and sewing. Retirement brought the opportunity to travel, including memorable trips to Europe and Jamaica. A devastating stroke in 2004 changed Pat’s life in many ways. Despite her paralysis and loss of speech, she maintained a positive outlook and enjoyed another decade residing at the Saskatoon Convalescent Home in Saskatoon. Pat was a devoted parent, a wonderful cook, an innovative artist and remarkable role model. She will be remembered with joy by her children: David Russell (Carmen Roy); Trudy (Lyle Froese); Cameron (Anita Bergen); April (Craig Smith) and son-in-law, Dean Rombough (Kate). She is survived by her grandchildren, Melissa and Dana Rombough; Samuel and Naomi Froese; Mackenzie and Alexa Nicolle; and Jennie Smith. She was predeceased by her daughter, Heather in 2010 and husband, Harvey in 2007. The family wishes to thank all of the staff and residents at the Saskatoon Convalescent Home for their affection and superb care of Pat. The home was a place she loved, especially the flower gardens, in which she spent many happy, sunlit hours. Pat requested that there be no memorial service. In her memory, hug someone you love and cultivate your own beautiful flowers. Cremation arrangements in care of MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (306-978-5200) www.mourningglory.ca
High Flight
"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds -
and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of -
wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along
and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.
"Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
the high un-trespassed sanctity of space,
put out my hand and touched the face of God."
