On November 29, 2022, Joceline Sylvia Prefontaine passed away at Royal University Hospital at the age of 62. Joceline was born in Regina, SK, and grew up in Montmartre. She excelled as a tom boy, playing multiple sports. Upon graduating from high school, Joceline moved to Regina to pursue post secondary education at the University of Regina where she quickly decided that university was not for her. With her quest for excitement, she found herself in Saskatoon, where she showed interest in being a first responder and went on a ride along with Ray’s Ambulance. She quickly fell in love with the career and moved to Prince Albert to take her Emergency Medical Technician training. Joceline stayed and worked EMS in Prince Albert until 1983, then relocated to her forever home Saskatoon, continuing to work EMS. She was a pioneer for females in non traditional roles. She became the first female firefighter for the Saskatoon Airport. In 1990 she achieved her dream career as one of the first 10 female police officers for the City of Saskatoon. Throughout her 25-year policing career she served in patrol, was a school liaison officer and found her passion in the Saskatoon Intergraded Drug Unit. She retired as a Detective Sergeant. As a result of her work with the Absentee Assessment Team, Joceline received the International Chiefs of Police Award for Community Policing. Having had an upbringing infused in politics, as well as a desire to create change, she entered the world of politics. Joceline was successful running as a candidate for the Saskatchewan Party where she served the Community of Saskatoon Sutherland as Member of the Legislative Assembly from 2007-2011. Joceline’s political career ended with the start of her battle with rheumatic heart disease. Her Christian faith was rekindled, and she practiced her faith in the Baptist Church. For a part time career, she worked as a Community Coroner for the Province of Saskatchewan but recently decided to fully retire and spend all her free time with loved ones. Joceline had a presence just walking into a room. Agree or disagree with her, she was always willing to speak her mind. Misogynists were best to beware while those in need experienced a huge heart. Joceline loved gardening, painting, arts and crafts and her grandchildren, who she was devoted to. She was the most amazing chef and enjoyed throwing dinner parties for family and friends. It was her way to show love. Joceline was predeceased by her father Dr. Lionel Prefontaine, her mother Rita Prefontaine (Pulai) and her sister Louise Hagel (Prefontaine). Joceline is lovingly remembered by her husband Gary Broste; children Elise (Doug) Nordick; Jarrod (Nicole) Schriemer; stepchildren Amanda Broste, Luke Broste, Matthew (Krista) Broste: grandchildren Devyn, Hanna, Coen, Lily, Cole, Jasper, and Brock; Siblings Wayne Hagel, Estelle (Paul) Lauzon, Lionel (Cathy) Prefontaine, Van Broste; and her many nephews, nieces, and cousins. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 6, 2022 at Ebenezer Baptist Church (107 McWillie Avenue, Saskatoon, SK). Arrangements entrusted to Travis Minor.
