August 12, 1933 – November 20, 2011
It is with great sadness that we, the family of Joe, announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather from a brief and valiant battle with brain cancer. The peaceful passing occurred on November 20, 2011 in the Palliative Care Unit at St. Pauls Hospital with his family by his side. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 54 years, Gladys and his daughters, Linda (Vic Kwiatkowski); Barb (Bernard Gartner) and Lisa (Cheryl Pain), his grandchildren Michael, Alyssa and Adam, as well as by his extended family; Keith and Donna Schmidt and their daughters Madison and Tawnya. His sister, Mary; his brothers John (Carol) and Orest ; Mother-in-law, Julia Sikorski; Sister-in-law, Gloria (Mat McGrath); Brother-in-law, Bernie (Irene); Ron; Ken (Donna) along with many more nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Nettie; his sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Mike Checkowy; and father-in-law, Edward Sikorski.
Joe was born on August 12, 1933 in Porcupine Plain. He received his education at High Tor School and in 1952 moved to Saskatoon and began working at MacCosham Van Lines. He drove coast to coast for 25 years, and like everything he did, he put his heart and soul into his job. Joe met Gladys in 1955, and they were married November 9, 1957. In 1974, Joe started working for Sears Delivery which gave him more time to dedicate to his family. Joe loved camping with his family and spending countless hours in his workshop building ‘gadgets’ for his grandchildren. For the past 15 years, Joe built approximately 1000 birdhouses for Father Robinsons Grade 3 Classes. These bird houses were used for an annual Fathers Day Project.
Our families are all richer for you having been a part of our lives. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Stakiw and all staff at St. Pauls Hospital Palliative Care Unit. They truly are Gods angels working here on earth. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Pauls Palliative Care Unit in Joe’s memory.
Funeral Liturgy for Joe will be celebrated at St. Peter the Apostle Church located at (1121 Northumberland Avenue), November 23, 2011 at 1p.m. There will be a private family burial. Condolences may be left for the family by visiting www.acadiamckaguesfuneralcentre.com. Arrangements entrusted to Kurtis Rae of Acadia McKague’s Funeral Centre, Saskatoon, SK (955-1600).
