Joel Otto Hjartarson

October 17, 1975 – September 6, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joel Otto Hjartarson on September 6, 2025, at the age of 49.

Joel was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and raised in the close-knit community of Walsh Acres. His formative years were filled with friendships that lasted a lifetime, and he will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, generous spirit, and infectious smile. Joel’s love for family, friends, and sports was a defining part of his life.

A passionate fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Blue Jays, and Vancouver Canucks, Joel’s spirited commentary—whether joyful or frustrated—was a cherished part of every season. His enthusiasm brought laughter and connection to those around him.

In his early twenties, Joel moved to Calgary, Alberta, surrounded by his brothers, good friends, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Though he embraced his new home, Joel remained a proud “Saskie” at heart. He later returned to Saskatchewan, settling in Saskatoon with his cousin Tera, where he continued to share his warmth and humor with those he loved.

Joel was predeceased by his beloved parents, Judy and Karl Hjartarson. He is survived by his brothers Eric (Melisa), Wayne (Annie), and Woody Hjartarson; his nephews Ryan, Kellan, and Kooper Hjartarson; his niece Carly Hjartarson; his many cousins, to whom he was more like a brother; his extended family of aunts and uncles; and a wide circle of friends who loved him dearly and will miss him deeply. Joel’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. His loving smile, giant hugs, and deep devotion to those he cared for will be missed beyond measure.

A celebration of Joel’s life will be held in the summer of 2026 at the Bjornson family farm. Details will be shared with family and friends at a later date.
