

On Tuesday, July 8th, John passed away very peacefully surrounded by family. John was born August 12, 1932, in Macklin, SK. John was raised on a farm in St John’s District along with 13 brothers and sisters. John obtained his elementary schooling at Koehmstedt School. He completed secondary schooling at St Thomas College, Battleford, SK., graduating in 1950. John attended Saskatoon Teacher’s College, obtaining a first-class teaching certificate. He taught middle grade at Palm School, SK. In 1953 he went into rural municipal administration serving in Senlac, SK, Reward, SK, and Bigger, Sk. In 1975, John moved to civic administration in North Battleford, SK.
While working in Senlac, John met his wife Helen Bingham, and they married in St. John’s Church on July 4, 1957. John and Helen were blessed with 5 children, 4 sons-in law, 1 daughter-in-law, 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren. Upon retirement in 1994, John and Helen enjoyed time at their cabin at Jackfish Lake. They also enjoyed many holiday excursions. They spent many winter holidays in California and Arizona. In 2000, they moved to St Albert, AB and spent 17 years there. In 2017, they moved back to Saskatchewan, settling in Saskatoon.
John was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a 4th Degree Knight and served several terms as Grand Knight and filled many other positions with the Order. In John's retirement years, he spent many a night at the games table and card tables with his grandchildren. John was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his grandchildren and his favorite professional teams.
John is lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Helen; daughters Karen (Alan) Schleper, Kate (Bud) Olson, Gail (Lorne) Giddings, sons Greg (Val), Hugh (Paul); grandchildren: Trevor (Ashley), Ryan, Cole (Anastasia), Meg (Ross), Jon, Emily (Bryn), Natasha, Josh (Indi), Kait (Matt), Jared (Kelli) and Jenna; great-grandchildren: Shayne, Mira and Margo; sisters: Anne Dundon, Jeannette Kollman, Agnes Flanagan, and Gen (Harold) Kennedy; brothers: Jerome and James; sisters-in-law: Phyllis Jansen, Brenda Jansen and Eileen Babchuk; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his parents: Appolonia and John Jansen; parents in law: Annabella and Hugh Bingham; sisters: Marie (Don) Mildenberger, Theresa (Jack) Maze (Leo Mitchell), and Sr Delores; brothers: Frank (Kathy), Peter, Ben (Alvina), and Raphael; sisters in law: Valeria Jansen, Valerie Jansen and Margaret (Robert) Giggs; and brothers-in-law, Leslie (Gladys) Bingham and Michael Babchuk.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Drive) in Saskatoon.
