Joe passed away with his family by his side at St. Paul’s Hospital on Friday, April 9, 2010 at the age of 87. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. from Acadia – McKague’s Funeral Centre (915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK) with Reverend Fr. Gene Warnke presiding. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon, SK. Joe is survived by two sons, Larry (Calgary, AB) and Pat (Whitehorse, YK), one daughter, Ava (Denis) of Saskatoon, SK; and two grandsons, Matthew and Andrew. Joe was predeceased by his wife Grace (1996), parents Rose (nee Waldenberger) (2004) and Ernie Stevens (1944).
Joe was born in 1922 at St. Paul’s Hospital and lived his early years at Marquis, SK. He joined the Canadian Army in 1942, joined the Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment and served in the invasion of Normandy and subsequent campaigns in Western Europe through to victory in 1945. Joe was discharged in early 1946.
Joe returned to Saskatchewan, went back to the civilian life, and met and married wife Grace in 1946. After a number of moves, the family settled in Saskatoon in 1957 and he found his calling with Sun Life Assurance. Joe ended his working career with the Corps of Commissioners before the loss of wife Grace.
Joe spent his final years enjoying his retirement which included, collecting a wide range of music and movies, taking computer courses, surfing the net, downloading music, loading up his iPod, e-mailing his sons, having coffee with his neighbours and friends, and driving his "special baby", a 2002 retro convertible T-bird, around town.
The family wishes to express a heartfelt thanks to the Surgical staff and the staffs of the Intensive Care and Palliative Care Units at St. Paul's Hospital for their concern and kindness, in essence their compassionate care, which made our father’s passing so much easier.
In lieu of flowers donations in Joe’s memory can be made to the Society of the Little Flower -
The Monastery of Mount Carmel (7021 Stanley Avenue, Niagara Falls, ON, L2G 7B7). Arrangements are in care of David Grambo, 955-1600
