It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that the family of Joyce Arlene Purdie announces her peaceful passing on August 4th, at the remarkable age of 95. Just a couple of weeks ago, Joyce remarked with characteristic grace, “I’m ready to take my boots off.”
Joyce had a large and loving family: her daughters Laura Smith (Graham), Donna Divall (Barry) and Janice Sholter (Rick), her twin sons Robert Purdie and James Purdie, eleven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several beloved nieces and a nephew.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Gordon (1990), her daughter Donna Divall (2008), her sister Patricia, and her parents Beryl and Delbert.
Throughout her life, Joyce embraced the joys of family, friendship, and creativity. She spent treasured weekends at Turtle Lake, visited extended family often, and even ventured on an unforgettable European river cruise in 2019—at the age of 90!
Joyce was well-known for her baking—sharing cookies with friends and family and faithfully making a traditional English fruitcake each Christmas using her mother’s recipe. Her hands were always busy creating—ceramics, cross-stitch, knitted sweaters and blankets, festive decorations, special quilts, and even Hallowe’en costumes. These lovingly made treasures will be passed down through generations as enduring memories of her.
An avid gardener in earlier years, Joyce delighted in preserving the harvest—freezing vegetables, making jams and jellies, and preparing crab-apple jelly from the tree in her backyard. More recently, she enjoyed sitting beside the garden by her patio, appreciating the flowers and sunshine until just last fall.
In September, Joyce transitioned into Celestial Care Home, where she quickly made new friends and embraced her days with enthusiasm—starting mornings with exercises, enjoying afternoon coffee socials, and playing Bingo in the evenings.
Joyce’s warmth, creativity, and enduring spirit touched everyone around her. Her legacy of love will continue to live on through the family she cherished and the countless lives she brightened along the way.
Two Celebrations of Life will be held to honour and celebrate Joyce's full life time.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 511 Garvie Road, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Monday August 18, 2025 at 1pm.
