It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Katherine “Katie” Nowakowski (neé Welder). She passed away at approximately 5:25 am the morning of March 14, 2025. Katherine was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, cousin and aunt. She leaves behind her loving husband William "Bill" who spent every day alongside her during their 64 years of marriage. Even in her last year and half at St. Ann’s, Bill was there with her twice a day taking care of her. Katherine will be remembered and cherished by her two sons Robert (Shauna) and Mark (Donna); grandchildren Mason (Gina), Tyler, Alyssa (Brandon), Brooklyn, Dawson, Vincent, Alexis and London; great grandchildren Aubree, Charlotte, and Everly; and her siblings Frank, Maggie and Murray. She is predeceased by parents Mike and Marion Welder, mother and father-in-law Walter and Anne Nowakowski; sisters Mary, Helen, Loretta; and brothers Gabriel “Geep”, Edward and Emmanuel.
Katherine was born in Zelma on a farm where she fondly spoke about life with her parents taking care of livestock and making ice cream in the front yard. She attended Limestone School until her family moved to Allan, Saskatchewan in 1949.
Katherine was working in a café when she met the love of her life in the spring of 1957 William "Bill" Nowakowski who was working on the oil rigs at the time. They knew they wanted a lifetime together and were married on August 17, 1960 at St. Mary’s Church with the wedding in Porcupine Plain.
Her passion for beauty and making people happy led her to begin her career by going to Marvel Beauty School in 1961. After graduating she worked at Paramount Beauty Salon for 28 years.
During this time Bill and Katherine also had two boys Robert and Mark who they devoted their lives to. Her family was her pride and she ensured they always came first. From playing softball in the field to making home cooked desserts and dinners, she ensured everyone was happy and well fed at all times. No one ever left her home hungry! Once she had grandchildren and great grandchildren, she found every moment she could to spend time with them as well.
Katherine also spoke fondly of her holidays to Lake Louise with her family or her bus adventure to Nashville with Janet. No matter where she went Katherine had a love for life.
In her final year and a half Katherine spent it in St Ann’s Care Home where she quickly turned these people into her extended family. She had a smile for everyone and truly loved them.
Katherine was one of a kind. She had a heart of gold and her smile would always let everyone know things were going to be alright. She was a mom to all and saw the best in everyone.
Thank you to St. Ann’s Care Home for going above and beyond for both Katherine and Bill. They have always treated them both like family to the point that Bill even felt like a resident.
