Kay was born in Dollard SK on June 16, 1923, to parents Josephine Weiss (Sullivan) and Albert Weiss who had immigrated from Crystal, North Dakota. Dollard was a French speaking community, so they had to learn French to fit in with the rest of the town folk. Kay’s father helped to run the general store in town. Kay had two older siblings, Harriet Roy and William (Bill) Weiss. Her family were also members of the Roman Catholic Community which she attended church every Sunday. She attended elementary school in Dollard then went to high school in Shaunavon afterward going onto secretarial school in Moose Jaw. Her first job was in Winnipeg but soon moved to Saskatoon and started working at Federated Co-operatives Ltd. where she worked until starting her family. She married Hilliard Murray Ibbitson in 1951. They started a family in 1962 with son Curtis Murray and a daughter Lori Gale in 1968.
Kay spent her spare time skating, tennis, curling, golfing and later with the seniors bowling league and with the CN social club where Kay and Murray made many new friends. The family also enjoyed camping every summer in Saskatchewan and many places across western Canada. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing cards and having delicious home cooked meals with fresh buns, pies, and other baking. Christmas cookies were another family favourite along with roasted almonds. Knitting and crocheting were other hobbies that she spent a lot of time doing. They also enjoyed month long trips out to Parksville, BC. on the island, plus Hawaii and Florida. As they got older Murray was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and in 2009 moved into Luther Heights Intermediate Care Home while Mom sold the house and moved to Luther Riverside Terrace that same year where she resided for an enjoyable 13 years. which included a 10 month stay in Intermediate Care at Luther Riverside Terrace. She met new friends while being able to enjoy walking on the paved paths on the grounds, playing pool, shuffleboard, cards, and coffee time while serving also as the Executive Secretary and the Riverside Greeter for the new tenants. In October 2022 she unfortunately contracted COVID pneumonia which landed her in St. Paul’s Hospital where she spent a month fighting for her life, she valiantly won that battle and moved to Sunnyside Adventist Care Center where she spent the last 5 months until her passing.
We would like to thank all the people that were involved with Mom’s care in her journey at Sunnyside Adventist Care Center, St. Paul’s Hospital and Luther Riverside Terrace. They provided Mom with the special care and treatment that she needed but also with the kindness and dignity that she deserved at that time which was greatly appreciated.
In lieu of flowers we ask that you donate to either Kinsmen Telemiracle, SCAT Street Cat Rescue or a charity of your choice.
Celebration of life will be Saturday May 6, 2023, at 1:00 pm at Mourning Glory Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel in Saskatoon. Internment will be a private ceremony at Glenside Cemetery on May 7, 2023.
