Leon grew up on a farm west of Flintoft, SK adjacent to the original family homestead. He began his education at the Dorgan school on a hilltop a few miles west. In 1951 the family relocated to the present-day farmstead location at Flintoft where Leon began another chapter in his life. He attended high school in Assiniboia, loved community dances, met the love of his life Annabelle Topola from Lakenheath, SK, married in 1962 and started a family. While farming, he took classes in Assiniboia and Moose Jaw, working to become a better steward of the land, welder and accountant.
Leon was active in various community organizations: Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, local Flintoft Co-op, Limerick Home and School, Limerick Co-op, Assiniboia 4-H Club, Canadian Co-operative Implements Ltd., and on a national level the National Farmers Union. He was also instrumental in paving the highway from Limerick to Wood Mountain.
Leon loved his family, was strong in his faith, and shared his time, talent and treasure with the churches in many local communities. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus taking on many officer and leadership roles.
Leon lived the definition of neighbour: lending tools, stopping what he was doing when the neighbours’ equipment limped into the yard requiring a weld repair, willing to lend farm equipment, willing to show up to seed, spray, or harvest for any neighbour in distress, and plowing out their snow-laden driveway.
Prayers and donations in Leon’s name gratefully accepted by the Hospice at Glengarda, Saskatoon, SK (https://www.stpaulshospital.org/foundation/hospice/howtohelp.php)
