The world became a little darker following the sudden passing of Lindsay Pickett, who left us on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 at the age of 70. We deeply mourn the loss of our loving and supportive husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend.
Born in Montreal but raised on the prairies, Lindsay grew up in Regina before moving to Saskatoon where he began what would be a 32-year career with Air Canada as a customer sales and service agent. During this time, he made many longtime friends, including Ray and Debbie Tetreault, and ultimately met and fell in love with Dale Kareckas. Lindsay and Dale were married at the Pickett Family Farm in Ontario in 1983. They welcomed their daughter Emily in 1986, followed by their son Kyle, in 1991. Lindsay enjoyed a variety of activities including marathons, triathlons, slow-pitch, hockey, and golf.
During his career with Air Canada, Lindsay held the role of District Chairperson, Local 2213 with the Canadian Auto Workers union where he passionately advocated for worker’s rights. The family spent many summers at the CAW Education Centre in Port Elgin, Ontario where Lindsay delivered educational programs to CAW members across the country. In 2005, he retired from Air Canada but continued his commitment to the labour movement by joining the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses as an Employment Relations Officer, where he also made many lasting friendships. In 2015, on his 62nd birthday, he gifted himself the best present – retirement.
Despite retiring, Lindsay continued his love of all things aviation. He could often be found excitedly running out to the deck with a pair of binoculars to track flights passing overhead, before entering them in an excel spreadsheet. This wasn’t the only thing he tracked, as he embraced the hobby of geocaching, which included him sporting a custom geocaching vest during his adventures. Lindsay also enjoyed spending time on motorcycle road trips across the province with his friends, and supporting the annual Motorcycle Ride for Dad prostate cancer fundraiser on Father’s Day.
Lindsay and Dale enjoyed travelling extensively, including spending time with Emily and Kyle in BC; relaxing in the muskoka chairs with a good drink with Peter and Elke at their cottage at Whalley Lake; and enjoying quality time and lots of laughs with Dave and Judy in their Florida home. Lindsay also looked forward to and appreciated Kellie bringing the family together for family fun days at the farm. Other travels included cruises that took them to Alaska, the Mediterranean, and on the Rhine River. They also spent time in London, Italy, Portugal, Spain and a special trip to Lithuania where Dale’s parents were from. They escaped the Saskatchewan winters by travelling to La Penita, Mexico where they developed great friendships.
Lindsay will be remembered as a master of corny dad jokes and cheesy one-liners, but also as someone who was deeply proud of his family. Lindsay is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dale; daughter Emily (Tommy); son Kyle (Kiersten); brother Dave (Judy); sister Kellie; and nieces and nephews - Michael, Andrew, Sarah, Alex, Charlie, Whitney, and KC – and their partners. We take comfort in knowing that Lindsay is with his father, Allan, his mother Sheila, and his brother Andrew in the afterlife.
As we navigate the path ahead we will honor Lindsay’s memory by embracing the values he cherished.
