Lois Frances McKay

Lois was born in Prince Albert Saskatchewan to Daniel and Donna Rooney. She was their Christmas gift delivered on December 24 1955.

She grew up in Prince Albert with siblings Johanne (Laurent Fournier), Donaureen (Dick Batten), Patricia (Larry Dey), Kathleen (Gerry Schimnowsky), Mary Lynn (Greg Schmidt), and Tom (Julie Fox) Rooney. She attended St. Mark’s elementary and St. Mary High School graduating with excellent marks and recognized and awarded “most lady like”; a title that may be seen as anachronistic today, but a title that truly reflected what she was to remain.

Upon completing her studies, she worked in a bank developing skills in loan management and computer applications. These skills would later benefit her family as they lived on a teacher’s salary but managed to pay off their home and cottage early.

Lois and her husband Arch raised seven gifted children: Colleen (Craig) Doepker, Jeanne (Will) McKay Rowan, Patricia (Clint) Hagel, Erin (James) Gratton, Thomas, Donna and John McKay. All of whom, like their mother, chose careers that benefited others. She was extremely proud of her fifteen grandchildren and often gave them gifts made by her own loving hand.

Lois also lived her faith everyday of her life. She and Arch taught Marriage Prep, Baptism classes, and RCIA at their parish Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and she worked for the Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon for several years before retiring.

Lois had a personality that lit up a room. To meet her was to immediately like her. Her modest faith-filled demeanour immediately put people at ease.

The family would like to thank the dedicated and overworked doctors, nurses, and CCAs at the University of Saskatchewan Oncology department and St. Paul’s Hospital Palliative Care department for their caring and professional work.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, March 14th at 1:00pm at Holy Spirit Catholic Parish (114 Kingsmere Pl.)
