October 29, 1994 - January 22, 2016
Marie passed away suddenly in La Loche, SK, at the age of 21. Marie was truly one of a kind. You could travel the world and never meet another person like her. It is impossible to capture her true character in words, but here are a few stories. Marie had an old soul, from a very young age she possessed a spirit full of love and compassion for all people and animals. Friends and family jokingly called her “Hama (grandma) Marie.” She was endlessly loving and thoughtful to people and animals. She loved to spoil her loved ones, especially the children. This past summer, there was an evacuation in La Loche due to the forest fires. Unfortunately many people were forced to leave their dogs behind. When Marie found out there were animals in need she went back to La Loche to help. Every day she brought food and water to the dogs who were starving. Hearing Marie tell the story herself would warm anyone's heart. She had a way with words and storytelling. She explained things in great detail and animation so you were sure to remember her stories. She shared the great concern she had about the wild bears eating from the garbage ground. She was heartbroken, seeing the wild bears eating toxic garbage and getting sick from it. She felt so helpless and that tore her heart up. She spoke about this for weeks. She was relieved when the bears hibernated for winter. She explored ideas as to how we could fence the garbage ground so the bears would not enter. These stories of selflessness are just a few from the many that Marie has. When Marie felt like she had something to say, she would say it without hesitation. It may be a truth about something that needed correcting in someone’s behavior or with logistical things such as how to organize or manage. She also let you know the positives of what she saw in others or a situation. With Marie, there was no guessing to what she was thinking or feeling. She let you know. Her honesty was one of her many great virtues. Marie was quick witted and could make anyone have a true, deep down belly laugh. She was a rare gem, a precious soul, a spirit without bounds. We will miss her and we know she is with us all in our hearts and souls. For those of us who had the great fortune to have known Marie, we have the gift of precious memories which we cherish in our hearts. Marie, we know you would want us to focus on the positives and to be good to each other, this we will do in your memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to La Loche Community School - Dene Building (Bag Service #3, La Loche, SK S0M 1GO). The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 30th at Our Lady of the Visitation Roman Catholic Church in La Loche, SK.
