BERGER, MARTIN PAUL
Martin, age 93, passed away peacefully and beautifully at home on Sunday November 11, 2018. Born on June 27, 1925, he was the 4th in line in a family of 8 children. He stayed on the family farm in Allan until he was 18. He then moved to Saskatoon where he did a variety of jobs until he found himself employed at the Patience Lake Potash Mine where he retired after 34 years. Throughout the years he spent countless hours with his family at Chitek Lake. Fishing was one of Martin's passions . He spent many hours teaching the grandchildren how to cast a rod, how to fish, and how to fillet. But when he took the grandchildren out in the boat to fish, he actually had to spent more of his time untangling fishing lines then he actually got to spend fishing. He was known as the Pied Piper whether he was at home or at the lake, because he always had a pack of grandkids and dogs in tow. For well over 50 years Martin was also a member of the Army and Navy Veterans Club, where he played in the seniors pool league and really enjoyed his time spent at the club with friends. He also enjoyed going to Smitty's in Market Mall for supper, because he was the first to admit he was not a good cook. He was a sports enthusiast and one hell of an armchair athlete. He always knew when a game was on that he wanted to see and never wanted to miss watching the Riders play. Martin was the center of our family and he loved spending as much time with us as he could. He was a very gentle, powerful man whom we will miss very much. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy; grandson Marty Bright; great-grandson, Jayden Koscielny; two sons-in-law Albert Sotnikow and Jake Peters; his parents; his infant brother John; brothers, Alex, Frank and George; in-laws, Don Bentley, Ed Kary, Emma and Anna Berger. Martin leaves to cherish his memory: his children: Audrey Peters, Lorraine Trout (Arlene Lockyer), Dale (Susan) Bright; daughter-in-law, Frankie Bright; grandchildren: Cindi Ruzesky, Tory Peters; Rhona (Jeremiah) Boehm, Lisa MacIntyre, Kristen (Rick) Mundell; Danae (Joe) Vanderveer; Leah (Devin) Heidt, Willy Bright; Tami York; Travis (Tammy) Bright; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; twenty-two great-great-grandchildren; four great-great-great-granchildren; two sisters, Agnes Bentley and Rose Kary; two brothers, Andrew Berger (Jean) and John Berger; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Donations in Martin’s memory may be made to SPCA or a charity of one’s choice. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Windsor Chapel (704 Windsor Street, Saskatoon). Interment will take place at a later date at Peaceful Pines Cemetery in Chitek Lake, SK.
