It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father Mel Dahlen on December 4th at St. Paul’s Hospital, his family by his side, just two months short of his 100th birthday. Dad was born in the Langham district and spent his early years in Valley Park before moving to Saskatoon. Dad met the love of his life Deci Evans on a “blind date” and they were married on May 8th, 1940. Dad served with the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War and as a “veteran” qualified to become one of the original members of the Montgomery Place community where he lived until 2005. Dad spent his working career in the automotive business, working his way up to the position of Service Manager at Saskatoon Motor Products, where he remained until his retirement in 1980. Music played an important role in Dad’s life. He was an accomplished, self-taught musician playing in numerous groups and bands starting with his own group “Mel and the Mountaineers”; The Garnet Burt Orchestra and later in life with the “Hobby Band” and the “Rey Dahlen Sound” to name a few. Throughout his life Dad allowed many to share in his love of music, playing many times at JD’s, the Bessborough, the Norwegian Pavilion at FolkFest and the Jazz Festival among others. Dad was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran church where he continued to share his musical gift, singing in the choir for 60 years. Dad was predeceased by “Darling Deci” his wife of 53 years, on November 4th, 1993; his parents Martin and Olga Dahlen; his 5 siblings, Doris, Cora, Rey, Olive, Art and Grandson Blair Carr. Left to cherish and treasure his memory are his son Dennis (Donna); daughters Donna Dahlen (Jim) McConnell; Darlene (Keith) Rans; Louise Dahlen (Ron Krowchuk). He is also survived by 14 Grandchildren, 30 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great Great Grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church. A Celebration of Dad’s life will be held on Friday, December 11, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Zion Lutheran Church ( 323 4th Ave. So. Saskatoon. SK) conducted by Pastor Randy Meissner. Arrangements are entrusted to Acadia McKague’s Funeral Centre. (306.955.1600)
