Our family regrets to inform you that Mel passed away in his sleep on March 11 at RUH. His 32-year battle was with heart disease. Mel was born in Saskatoon and raised in Asquith, SK. Mel was a natural born athlete. He played hockey, curled and enjoyed playing golf, but baseball was his game. He was strong on the mound. As early as 16 years, senior men’s teams would pick him up to play with their teams. As a youth, he played for Asquith and as a young man, he played for Unity Cardinals. Mel was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame for Outstanding Player in 2005 and again in 2007 as a member of the Asquith Braves Baseball Team.
Mel loved to hunt and fish. He brought home many deer which became very tasty deer sausage. He had his black and brown bears made into two beautiful bear rugs that for many years were laid on the family room floor in front of the fireplace he had built. Mel’s career was in agriculture sales. He worked 18 years for Flexi-Coil and then Saskatoon Farm and Garden (John Deere) for 8 years. His health gave him early retirement at age 57.
His family: wife Colleen; son Brent (Jane); their daughters Jenna (Daniel) and Karilyn; daughter Jackie (Brad), their daughters Nicole (Devon) and Cassidy (Connor) want to thank the amazing staff on 6th floor at RUH for caring for Mel. Mel, Dad, Papa; we want to thank you for introducing us to Hawaii and the many special times there.
There will be a private family graveside service later this summer.
