Dad attended Mildred, Amiens and Shell Lake schools, and then began a long and varied career in Education. He enrolled in Teachers' College in 1953, and attended Summer classes while teaching in the Turtleford S.U, Northern Affairs (Chitek), Lloydminster S.U., Smiley and Dundurn, and received his Bachelor of Education Degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 1967.
After that, in order to be closer to his ailing mother, Dad accepted a teaching position in Spiritwood. He taught there for 2 years, and then in 1969/70 took the family to Palm Springs, CA for the winter. Upon returning, Indian Affairs hired him as Education Counselor at Meadow Lake, then North Battleford and Shellbrook. Dad went back to teaching, and retired from the Humboldt S.D. in 1987.
In 2003 he was hired to go to Taiwan to oversee the building & staffing of English-speaking schools. Dad had many happy memories of his decade in that beautiful, tropical land, and loved to reminisce about his travels and adventures there. Upon his return, he settled in Saskatoon and spent many happy years at Preston Park Manor.
Dad leaves to mourn his daughters, Sherry, Shona (John Scappaticci) and son Darby (Lisa), grandchildren Kiera, Justin & Alex, and niece & nephews, Bernadette, Garth and Michel Pelchat. He was predeceased by his brother Harold, sister Shirley Pelchat, brother Grant, mother Edna and father Clifford.
The family would like to thank the compassionate, caring nurses and caregivers at 6300 RUH and the Transitional Care Unit at City Hospital for their excellent care of Dad during his eight week stay in the hospital.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Acadia McKague’s Funeral Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
A Memorial Lunch will be held at the Avalon Alliance Church, 413 Cascade Street, Saskatoon, SK, on Saturday, April 1st at 12:30 pm.
