Neil was born on August 10, 1946, in Edam, Saskatchewan, to Cornelius (Neil) and Betsy Wouters. From an early age, he was known for his natural athletic ability and an enthusiasm for sport that would follow him throughout his life. He excelled in hockey, baseball, and curling, earning numerous trophies and accolades along the way. Stories of his days on the ice—playing with teams such as the Edam 3-Stars, Meadow Lake Stampeders, and the Regina Pats—were often retold at family gatherings.
It was through hockey that Neil met the love of his life, Irene Pilat, in Glaslyn. The two were married in 1966 and built a beautiful life together, eventually settling in Glaslyn in 1970 where they raised their three children. Neil and Irene moved to Saskatoon in 2003 where they continued to stay closely connected to their family. Family was the pride and joy of Neil’s life. He was deeply grateful for each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable happiness.
Neil’s passion for sport naturally led him into coaching, where he spent many years guiding baseball and hockey teams in both Glaslyn and North Battleford. He transitioned seamlessly from player to coach, and in later years became the proudest fan in the stands as he followed his grandchildren’s many athletic pursuits.
Alongside his sporting life, Neil developed a deep love for farming while working with his father. This passion guided much of his working career in agriculture related industries. His work brought the family to five different communities before they planted roots in Glaslyn, where they continued to build a strong and loving home.
A dedicated community member, Neil gave generously of his time. He volunteered with the local Rec Board, Kinsmen Club, Minor Ball, and Minor Hockey, helping strengthen the community he cared so much about.
Although Neil carried a big physical presence, those who knew him understood that he was, above all else, a man of exceptional kindness, generosity, and heart. He had a special compassion for those facing hardship, and his quiet acts of care left a lasting impact on many.
Neil is lovingly remembered by his wife Irene (Pilat) Wouters, their children:
• Darren (April) and their children Katelyn (Bart) Archdekin (Kinley, Elliott, Ayla), Kelsey (Will) Budzinski (Grady, Emerson, Lowen), and Jordan (Jessica) (Jack);
• Cheryl (Charles) Mullner and their children Kiana (Andrew) Dye and Carter.
• Jason (Jaime) and their children Tyson and Brady.
He is predeceased by his parents Cornelius and Betsy Wouters; his sister Bernice and her husband Lorne Roach; and his nephew Larry Roach.
Neil’s legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest peacefully.
In keeping with Neil’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held to celebrate his life.
