Philip Alphonse Muench, a gentle soul and gentleman, peacefully passed away with family at his side on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at the age of 89 years. Phil was predeceased by his wife and soulmate, Marie (nee Puetz), his daughter in law, Michele, and a grandson, Brett. He is lovingly remembered by his children Kathy (Mark), Barb (Jim), Susan (Greg), Greg, Pat (Lindsay) and Doug (Denise); 16 grandchildren: Trisha, Kevin (Layla), Melanie (Matt), Michelle (Andrew), Darren (Beth), Ryan (Sarah), Sarah (Nick), Rob, Mitch (Avi), Connor (Tomi), Ethan, Evann, Kade, Megan, Evan (Alex), Derek (Rhea), and 5 great grandchildren – Buddy, Sally, Jackson, Brody and Davis. Born and raised in Muenster, Saskatchewan, Phil’s career with Scotiabank began in Humboldt shortly after graduation from St Peter’s College. He and Marie also soon married and over the next 9 years, “toured” many communities in Saskatchewan and Alberta courtesy of work transfers during which their 6 children were born. Finally settling the family in Saskatoon, Phil also began his participation in several community and church volunteer service roles, most notably as a 50+ year member of the Riversdale Kiwanis Club – a club which he remained active in even while in hospice care. Through his years at the “20th and Ave C” Scotiabank branch, his other community activities and his several retiree “coffee row” groups, Phil established and maintained a large network of friends. His understated wit and sense of humour remained evident even through his final health challenges. Part of the void that resulted from Marie’s early passing was eventually reduced by sharing in the lives of his many grandchildren and eventually great grandchildren. He was an active sportsman all his life, with a particular affinity for curling and golf. Painting, drawing, and pottery provided outlets for his creative talents in spite of a humility in taking credit for the wonderful work that he made. We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the staff at The Hospice at Glengarda and St Anne’s Palliative care facility for the excellent care and enrichment they provided for Dad during this past year. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15 at Holy Family Catholic Cathedral (123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon) with Very Rev. Fr. Stefano Penna. Rite of Committal to follow reception at Woodlawn Cemetery. For those unable to attend please visit www.faithproductions.ca/livestream to view the service. Memorial donations may be made in Phil’s memory to The Hospice at Glengarda (www.stpaulshospital.org/foundation/donate) and/or Saint Anne’s Senior’s Village (www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/28225).
