Shirley died peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, SK, with family at her side. Shirley was predeceased by her father, Lawrence, and one brother. Shirley was born to Lawrence and Maria Meier on February 26, 1952, in Sudbury, ON, and grew up in rural Saskatchewan. In 1974, she married the love of her life, Roger Carriere. Their children, Stacey (1977), Leanne (1979), and Adam (1984) provided true joy in Shirley’s life, and her nieces and nephews all benefitted from her love of children. Shirley considered her grandchildren to be life’s reward and treasured them. After graduating from Maidstone High School in 1970, Shirley studied Nursing at Kelsey, and started work as a Registered Nurse in North Battleford. In 1974, Shirley returned to Saskatoon with her new husband, Roger, so that he could study Engineering while she worked in Labour and Delivery at the University Hospital. She continued to work as a nurse in a variety of roles until her death, despite several attempts to retire. Shirley was loved by staff and patients on all the wards she worked, thanks to her capabilities, compassion, and sense of humour. Shirley developed a large circle of friends through her career and hobbies. Along with her extensive yet close family, they will miss the creative pursuits that started with her cooking and sewing. Shirley discovered her artistic passion in pottery, and her innovative work has traveled the world. The Vigil for Shirley will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2018. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2018. Both services will be held at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon.
