September 27, 1934 – February 23, 2017
With family by her side, Shirley passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital on February 23, 2017 at the age of 82. Survived by her beloved husband of nearly 58 years, Les; daughter, Lisa Wensley (Mitch); son, Neil; granddaughters; Madelyn and Karmen Wensley and her brother, Ronald Sharp (Natalie). Lovingly remembered by her brothers- and sister-in-law, Harold (Sandra) Hoffman, Dale (Jane) Hoffman, Ferne (Bob) Mercer; her nieces and nephews and their families. Predeceased by parents, Louis and Isabelle Sharp and in-laws Louis and Ethel Hoffman. Shirley grew up on the family farm near Balcarres and went on to graduate from the Regina Normal School only to decide that teaching was not her true calling. She excelled in a secretarial program at the Saskatoon Business College which led her to work in the Library and Admin. Office with NRC in Saskatoon. It was there that she met her soul mate, Les, and they married in April 1959. Shirley left NRC to raise her family and get them well established in school and activities, a source of tremendous pride. Returning to a second career at the U of S with Soil Science, she served four different directors. After 21 years, Shirley retired to follow her creative passion, quilting. A talented seamstress, Shirley found her retirement niche and an amazing social circle within the Grassland Quilters and Serendipity. She made beautiful quilts for charities, friends and her family, keepsakes for special occasions in their lives. Her choice of colors and patterns were coordinated with perfection. Each one had to meet her standards. Shirley and Les enjoyed several weeks each summer at the family cottage at Candle Lake, especially with son Neil, over a 35 year span. They also loved their warm getaways to Mexico and Hawaii. In recent years, Shirley and Les travelled to Ottawa to spend time with their cherished granddaughters, Madelyn and Karmen, sharing in their active world with Lisa and Mitch. Precious memories. “One who sleeps under a quilt is comforted in love.” Tributes in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (#26-1738 Quebec Ave, Saskatoon, SK S7K 1V9) or the First Saskatchewan Lutheran Church (23 Fifth Avenue, Langham, SK S0K 2L0). A Celebration of Shirley’s Life will take place in the early summer of 2017. Details will be published in the Star Phoenix.
