She was born on May 22, 1943 in North Battleford to parents Michael and Mary Ryhorchuk. She was one of four siblings. Zonia grew up in Denholme and North Battleford, Saskatchewan.
Zonia married her first husband, Archie Melvin Thompson and together they had 3 children; Warren, Mary Dee and Troy. They parted their ways, she became the prime caregiver of their children, and she made sure they had the necessities of life, involvement in sports with much love and care.
She moved her family to Saskatoon from North Battleford. Her occupations were: bank teller, ran a board and room and care home, ran the coffee shop at Saskatoon Motor Products, and later worked at the Royal University Hospital at the main cafeteria. Before retirement, she was a caregiver with Palliative Care.
She married the love of her life, her best friend Dale Aubrey Volden on January 28, 2006, after many years together. Dale lost his battle with cancer on July 9, 2006 in her arms.
Zonia was caring, compassionate, loving and social. She was never afraid to be her true self with anyone. She loved to garden, can preserves, cook and bake. She was known for her perogies, cabbage rolls, tarts, pies, squares and her famous buns. She loved to share them with her family and friends. She loved to prepare trays of goodies for parties, funerals and Christmas. Her baking was delicious and people would put in orders. She loved to frequent the Saskatoon Farmer’s Market where she was known too many. She had a special friendship with a Hutterite Colony that she met there.
Zonia loved to travel and experience life to the best of her abilities. She travelled to Mexico, Alaska, Arizona and B.C. (where she and Dale took the train there for their honeymoon).
Zonia was known for her flare of style. She was always dressed to the nines form her head to her toes. She loved jewelry and having a splash of purple in her hair. She was thrifty and loved a good deal, a bargain, a sale so her money went a long way. Zonia loved to dance and was very good at it and made many appearances at The Legion and The Airliner and danced the night away.
Zonia was a proud owner of a white 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Super Sport car. She loved when somebody gave her a compliment on it.
Zonia had a zest for life, a twinkle in her eye, a geat sense of humor and a laugh that went with it.
Her parents predeceased her: Michael and Mary Ryhorchuk, her husband Dale Volden and her son Troy Thompson.
Zonia is survived by her children Warren Thompson (grandsons: Mason and Krypton), Mary Dee (Ron) Thompson (grandson, Matthew) along with many family members and friends.
We are comforted to know you are at peace and we look forward to seeing you again. We will miss you and you will be forever in our hearts.
A Celebration of Zonia’s life will be held on Thursday September 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Windsor Chapel (704 Windsor Street Saskatoon). Arrangements entrusted to Aime Laventure.
