With sadness the family announces the passing of their mother, Violet Evelyn Ehman on Wednesday, November 1st, 2023, in Saskatoon, three days short of her 95th birthday.
Violet is survived by her children Richard (Margaret), William (Wendy), Susan (Tom), and Mark (Annie); as well as her grandchildren Eric, Jeffrey, Katie, Dylan, Morgan, Caitlin, Megan, David, and Carolyn; and seven great grandchildren Sigga, John, Alyx, Abigail, Jennifer, Matthias, and Nicholas. She was predeceased by her husband Lorne Ehman.
Violet was born on November 4, 1928, to Anna and Thor Haugen in Broadview, Saskatchewan. After graduating from high school in Regina, she went on to train at Regina General Hospital School of Nursing, and as a Registered Nurse, worked at the Prince Albert Sanitorium and with the Red Cross Outpost Hospital Service in Northern Saskatchewan. In 1951 Violet married Lorne Ehman and they settled in Macklin, Saskatchewan for seven years. During those years, Violet nursed at the local hospital and the family expanded to include four children. In the following years, while assiduously raising the family and maintaining the household, Violet pursued her spiritual, educational, employment, community, and artistic interests. As well as nursing at Saskatoon hospitals, she went on to receive her BSc in Nursing with great distinction and a postgraduate diploma in Continuing Education from the University of Saskatchewan. She taught nursing at Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon and Health Education at the U of S College of Education. She retired in 1987 after twelve years as Coordinator for Continuing Medical Education in the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. Violet was actively involved in the Saskatoon Division of St. John Ambulance Nursing and was invested as Serving Sister in the Order of St. John of Jerusalem by Governor General George Vanier. As well as being a long-time participant, committee member and lay presider at her church of Holy Spirit Parish, she was a member of the Catholic Family Services Board of Directors for six years.
Our mother was keenly intelligent, endlessly curious, a perfectionist, and a multitalented artist, crafter, and sewer. She shared her talents and skills with her children and grandchildren. She was a tenacious teacher but also taught by example. She believed in the benefits of healthy food and daily exercise. She was a wonderful cook and was adventurous with food. She loved her cats, Snoopy and Tiger. She loved flowers and gardening. But most of all she loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, keeping up with their activities, disappointments, and triumphs.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to Home Care workers Sherry and Denise, Home Care Nursing, and the staff and care team at Circle Drive Special Care Home. We also want to recognize the exemplary and compassionate care provided, over many years, by her Family Physician, Dr. Rhonda Reiniger.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon). The Rite of Committal will take place at the Columbarium, St. John’s Cathedral, at a later date.
Arrangements entrusted to Thea Katchmar.
