Mom was born Sept 12, 1938, on a farm near Muenster, SK, and later moved to a farm near St. James, SK when she was only 2 years old. Since Mom was the second oldest child, she often had to care for her younger siblings. Mom loved to work and play outside with her 3 brothers and 2 sisters. She told us stories of their horse, Barney, who was hitched to a cart that her father built to take them to school. Often, they raced the other children home. Mom and her siblings were proud that Barney always won.
When mom was 17, she moved to Middle Lake and worked at the ML cafe, where she met Dad. Mom and Dad married on Oct 1, 1956. Together they raised 6 children; Marilyn, Sharon, Murray, Audrey, Ronald and Cindy. Mom worked hard on the farm, planting and weeding huge gardens, raspberries, strawberries and fruit trees to feed her family. She enjoyed being outside and often commented on how beautiful nature was. Mom was always proud when she got her baby chicks in spring and lovingly tended to them until fall when she butchered them to fill the freezer. Mom worked side by side with Dad planting the crops and bringing in the harvest each year, working tirelessly and never complaining.
Mom loved to dance and found a great dance partner when she met Dad. It was common on a Saturday night to see them dancing around the kitchen listening to old time dance music on the radio.
Mom enjoyed being surrounded by family. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest joy. She was a good listener and had a genuine interest in all their lives. The grandchildren fondly remember spending summers at Grandma’s house and listening to old time music while playing cards.
In her later years Mom moved to Ilarian Residence in Saskatoon, where she made many good friends and enjoyed dancing, building puzzles, playing cards but most of all, her friendship with the other residents. Mom spent many hours going for walks and sitting outside enjoying the fresh air.
Mom passed away at Glengarda Hospice after a battle with cancer. Throughout her last days she spent precious time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, no matter how tired she was, she was always happy to see them all.
