It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wm. (Bill) Patrick at the age of 85 on August 1, 2015 with his wife of 60 years, Vivian (nee Harvey), at his side. Bill was the son of Anthony (Tony) and Anne Patrick, two Ukrainian immigrants who arrived in Canada in 1917 and 1918 respectively, who eventually would settle on the West side of Saskatoon, after a stop in New York City and Ontario. Bill had eight siblings; Jim, Mary, Julie, Olga, Patricia, Mike, Nick and Wally of which all but Patricia and Mary are deceased. Bill leaves behind his seven children, Barbara (Sheldon), Douglas (Monica), William Joseph (Billy-Joe)(Alana), Jacqueline (Ken), Kelly, Shannon (Cameron) and Daniel (Helene). To carry on in his large footsteps are his 17 beautiful grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister in law, Jean Thompson. Bill was a family man, a man of faith, an entrepreneur, a political animal, a sports enthusiast and a community organizer in all things Saskatoon. He had a strong personality and a bigger spirit which lent itself to many fascinating projects and ventures throughout his lifetime. Bill was into earth moving and heavy equipment. Most notably Dad built Patrick Pipeline Ltd into a successful sewer and water company, laying pipe and providing the basic essential in municipal development in Northern Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Hamilton, and once, in Saudi Arabia. With the growth of Saskatoon in early 2000’s, Bill would foresee the need for aggregate and continue on with his passion for progress and growth up until his last years. Bill was an incredible provider for his wife, who survived a massive stroke at the age of 40. With seven small children, Bill maintained the family exceptionally, with pride and strength, allowing all of us to prosper and thrive as a unit. He loved Viv more than anything. Bill was an avid sportsmen, who knew full well that strong communities included children and the opportunity and access for all to play. Bill was instrumental in the establishment of the Saskatoon Playground Hockey Association with many other families who shared his love of hockey. Dad was also the General Manager of the Saskatoon Senior Quakers and took the team to Czechoslovakia in 1962, the last time Saskatoon was represented by a professional hockey team. Bill also loved baseball and supported Saskatoon’s first professional baseball team, the Saskatoon Patrick Liners. He also ‘unofficially’ managed several of his kids hockey and baseball teams, not missing a game or buying the team dinner after a win. Dad played golf up until two years ago, when walking, smoking and telling others to relax, became too difficult. Dad was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the Saskatoon Exhibition, St. Peter and Paul’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and lately St. Paul’s Cathedral. Bill loved politics so much he ran unsuccessfully every time. However, his passion for community and this country never abated, with Bill donating, time, money, effort and the odd ‘Boot or Salute’ on CJWW when the chance occurred. Dad was liberal through and through believing in fairness, acceptance, respect and giving back. He was a member of the very first Task Force on First Nations and Metis Relations in Saskatchewan in 1965, appointed by Ross Thatcher. Later, he would be appointed to tribunals and committees on behalf of two Liberal Prime Ministers. The Vigil for Bill will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7th and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8th with Rev. Father Denis Phaneuf as celebrant. Both services will be held from St. Paul's Co-Cathedral (720 Spadina Cres East). A Private Rite of Committal will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.
