I'm here to commemorate the life of our Mom, Grace Reid, born April 24, 1926 in Hilton Beach, St. Joseph Island to late Clara and late Arthur Church.
Our Mom married our Dad, late Ted Reid, on Jan 11, 1944. Together they lead a simple life, filled with the love of a large family that they had together. A total of 10 children, 16 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren.
After our Dad passed away, Mom met Dominique Frechette and spent 19 happy years together before Domique passed away.
She was the middle child of 13 siblings, 5 sisters who have passed, 5 brothers who have passed, along with 2 surviving brothers. Mom was a sister in law to 4 of Dad's siblings who have passed. Mom was an also an aunt to many, many nieces and nephews.
She was such a strong woman, she survived loosing so many loved ones and friends. Along with teaching each of us strength, we were always encouraged to be whomever we wanted to be. Instilling into us good manners, respect of others and a hard work ethic. She was our family's rock, a very loving lady who will be missed by many.
Mom loved to knit, crochet, sew quilts and garden both vegetables and more lovingly-flowers. She enjoyed spending time with family, friends and neighbours and always enjoyed a good joke. Even in her last weeks, when asked how she was feeling, she would answer with (rub fingers and thumb).
When we were growing up my mother made sure my siblings and I were always taken care of. She would sacrifice her own needs and happiness for ours. She set an example that if you worked hard enough, things you need and want will come your way.
When we were younger we didn’t understand that, but she was just that type of giving person. As we grew up we began to realize Mom was one of the good ones. She always said you had to be nice to everyone even if they weren’t nice to you. She would give anyone the shirt off her back and go out of her way to help a friend in need.
So many memories of my mother come to mind, it would be next to impossible for me to pick a favorite. When her time was growing short in those last few days she spent time with each one of us. That will go in my memory bank as one of my favorite times with her. We were lucky to have such a great mother, and even luckier that we were able to spend so much time with her at the end of her life.
Mom loved us all unconditionally, she is with us today in our hearts. Words can't express how much she meant to me and my family. I feel honoured and privileged to be her daughter. I know she is watching us and is with us in spirit. Let us remember Mom as the carefree and loving person she was and celebrate the life of a great woman as we honor her memory today.
