With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of James Fredrick "Freddy" Court, age 89, on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at home, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on January 2, 1936, at Richards Landing Hospital on St. Joseph Island, Fred was a lifelong Islander through and through. He grew up working hard on his mother’s farm and carried that work ethic with him throughout his life. While he spent many years employed at the steel plant in Sault Ste. Marie — where he also owned a home — his heart never strayed far from the Island. He cherished time at the beloved family camp on Court’s Point, passed down by his parents, and eventually returned home for good, settling into retirement on Neebish Road.
Fred was a man of many talents — truly a jack of all trades — and always ready to lend a helping hand. He was passionate about hunting, fishing, camping, dancing, and attending community events. A proud member of local churches, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Hunters & Anglers Association, he was a familiar and beloved face at gatherings across the Island.
Above all, Fred was a devoted family man. He was the loving husband of the late Claudette Court and a proud father to Brenda Corbett (Mark) and the late Kevin Court. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Trisha, Crystal, Shawna, Leslie (Sylvain), Courtney (Dylan), Matthew (Brook), and Cody; great-grandchildren: Tyler, Patrick (Summer), Dakota, Keisha, Domanick, Brigittie, Gabe, Jace, Jacob, Aurora, and Dean; and his treasured great-great-grandchildren: Aria and Kashton.
Fred found great joy in being surrounded by family and activity. He lit up whenever the transport trucks were parked in the yard — a sure sign the boys were home — and always asked when his son-in-law Mark would be pulling in next. He especially loved sitting back and watching the “big jobs” being done in the yard by Sylvain, Mark, and Matt, always smiling with pride and curiosity. Whether it was fixing, hauling, or building something, Fred was happiest when there was work going on — and family around to do it. He also cherished the simple joys, like watching his grandchildren play on the beach and swim in the water, their laughter echoing across the shore — moments that brought him deep peace and happiness.
He will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbours, and countless friends. Freddy had a true gift for making others feel welcome. He especially lit up when family came to visit, always asking with a grin, “Are you staying the night?” and, come morning, his favourite phrase: “Are you up for the day?”
Fred's life was rooted in service, laughter, and love. His strong spirit and kind heart will live on in the many lives he touched.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at the Royal Canadian Legion, St. Joseph Island from 2:30 to 5:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations (payable by cheque or online) to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 374, the St. Joseph Island Hunters & Anglers Association, or a local community group of your choice in Fred’s memory.
