Born on August 23, 1931, the son of the late Vince and Anastasia “Tay” Ryan, he resided in Sault Ste. Marie all but six months of his life. He was married to Marilyn (Miller) for over sixty-six years and now they are together again. Daughter, Anna Lee and son-in-law, Grant Buck will miss his advice, support, and generosity. Andrew Jordan and his wife, Melissa will miss their grandfather’s stories, viewpoints, and practical tips. His great granddaughter, Marion loved to play with Grandpa Joe.
Joe was pre-deceased by his brothers Jack and Norman (Bud), son Fred, sisters-in-law Diane Bates and Gwen Ryan plus his brother-in-law Bill Giddings. Joe is survived by his sister-in-law, Sandra Giddings and his brother-in-law Hank Bates. Kathy, Mike, and Jackie Ryan kept in touch with their Uncle Joe. Steven, Terry, Michelle, Krista and their families are also Joe’s nephews and nieces. In addition, Marilyn and Joe shared adventures, activities, and dinners with a family of extremely close friends for over sixty years. Joe received strong support within this tight knit family of friends.
Joe was an active person in his community over his lifetime. He was a long-time employee of the Algoma Steel Corporation, beginning as a utility maintenance person and finishing his career there as a gas coordinator. Throughout his adult life he donated his time and commitment to a variety of causes – assistant coach for the old “Y” swim team, ski instructor, ski patroller at the various ski hills and president of the Men’s YMCA Club.
For a while he and Marilyn worked at Christmas Cheer. Boating was his passion, and he became very involved with the Canadian Power Squadron Association plus the Great Lake Cruising Club holding various executive positions. For the last thirty years he chased a golf ball around the various courses in the local area and in Florida.
