I first met the Buck family back in 1974 we had moved in at Diamond Lake and I remember my Dad and Merv became good friends, It was a great part of my life growing up knowing Merv and his boys and his wife. I still remember the times at the lake in the leaky tent trailer and Dad and Merv singing and playing the guitar around the fire those were great years and memories and Merv will always be remembered. To Darryl Darrin and your families all the best from my family to yours.

I was first introduced to Merv way back in the eighties when Darryl met the love of  his life Patti.  Our families have been interwined ever since.    From what I understand, in his younger days, Merv was something of a hellrasier but that is not the man I came to know, love and respect.  I encountered a man who loved his family and life.
I was fortunate to have known Darryl and Darrin's mother, Shirley, who left her family much too early in life.  Merv was pretty much lost and alone when an angel by the name of Pauline was sent to guide him through his sorrow and despair.  Pauline became a  welcome addition to the Buck-Ostroski clan.
Merv was a quiet, soft spoken man who didn't seem to have much to say.  He wasn't one for talking just for the sake of talking but when you did engage in conversation with him, you realized how thoughtful and insightful he was, with core values of decency and kindness.  Merv may not have had a university degree but he had a masters in human nature.  
Years ago, Darryl shared this story that left quite an impression on me and gave me insight into how he and his brother Darrin were raised as young boys growing up in Desarats.  I would like to share it with you now:
Darryl and his dad were out visiting a neighbour somewhere out back of Desbarats.  As most young boys liked to do, Darryl went exploring in some outer buildings and  came across an old gun.  Excited with his discovery, he took the treasure to show his father and the gun's owner.  To Darryl's amazement and delight, the neighbour gave him the gun.  (This was long before the gun registry legislation was introduced.)  Sometime later, Darryl received an offer to sell the gun he had been given and thought that this would be an opportunity to have some extra spending money (probably to buy a new potato launcher or some firecrackers).  When he approached his father for advice as to what he should ask for the gun, Merv's response was â€œWell, how much did you pay for the gun?â€  And Darryl replied â€œNothingâ€  Merv said â€œThen that should be your asking priceâ€.
This basic example of goodness and wisdom is what influenced Darryl and Darrin to grow and develop in the fine men they are today.  To be honest, I attribute those qualities that Merv had demonstrated,  as being  responsible for Darryl's success as a businessman.    The world would me a better place if more people had these simple basic qualities of goodness, kindness, common sense and decency, care and compassion for your family, friends and neighbours.  Those same qualities have been passed along to his daughter-in-law Patti, who assisted in Merv's health care and recovery and to Jenna, Mark and Luke. 
To Pauline, Darryl, Patti, Jenna, Mark and Luke, Darrin and Dani, Nicole, Alycia and Jordan, Joshua, Cody and Hunter, we share in your loss and grief, but take comfort in knowing that Merv will be waiting patiently for you to join him in heaven.

It is great sadness that we note the passing of Merv.Our heartfelt sympathies go out to you the families I still have many fond memories of hockey games and hockey trips with your Dad .They were always fun .Unfortunately we are south and can't extend our condolences in person.

Merv will not only be missed by Pauline and the family, but by his many friends in the camping areas of "The Pit" and Peshu Lake.
