BORTONE, Antonio Rocco "Tony" - Passed away peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital on Thursday, January 29, 2026, surrounded by family and friends at the age of 71 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Devoted husband of Giuseppa "Josephine" Bortone (nee Del Paggio) for 45 wonderful years. Loving father of Lucy (Eric), Ben (Marien), and Dave (Michelle). Proud grandpa of Lauren, Noah, Leo, and Emmett. Tony is reunited with his parents Benedetto and Lucia Bortone. Dear brother of the late Rocco Bortone. Predeceased by his grandparents, Antonio and Maria Bortone & Pietro and Angela Cuccovia. Son-in-law of Incoronata and the late Michele Del Paggio. Brother-in-law of Maria (Phil), Giovanna (Alessandro), and Rosa (Patrizio). Uncle of Claudia, Michael (Angela), Michele (Angelica), Gabriele, and Marco (Elena). Nephew of late Teresa, late Nicola (late Antonio Palermo), Giuseppina, late Teresa (late Mattia Notte), late Rocco Cuccovia (late Josephine) and late Anthony Cuccovia (Betty). Tony will be missed by his dear friends Steve Bortolon, Evert Lamberts, Brian Madill, Frank Bock, and many more.
His family was the most important thing to him. He adored his grandchildren and loved watching them grow and experience new things, especially his little princess. He enjoyed travelling to his hometown in Italy and spending time with his family there. As a devoted Catholic, Tony spent years being an usher at Our Lady of Good Counsel.
Tony was a member of Field Forces at Algoma Steel until he retired in 2012. In his spare time, Tony repaired antique furniture for By Gone Antiques for many years. His passion for woodworking can be seen throughout his home from kitchen cabinets to tables that he constructed in his garage. Tony always needed to keep his hands busy with a project and after retiring, he joined Sault College where he taught welding. He enjoyed teaching new skills to anyone and we have all learned from his experience and wisdom. Tony volunteered for the Algoma Model Engineering Society, building and driving the train for the kids to enjoy.
Anyone that met Tony had nothing but good things to say about him. If he wasn't fixing things around the house or working in the garden, he would be helping neighbours and family when issues arose. Everyone knew they could come to him for help. He never gave it a second thought to help out anyone in need and was always first to lend a hand.
We are going to miss you Dad.
