As I spoke with Albert recently my memories of Tony includes the whole family.  So welcoming when we would decide on a whim to make the several hour drive from Waterloo/Toronto to  the Sault and regardless of the time we arrived (typically 1 or 2am) one would honestly believe it was 12 noon with the laughs, the food on the table and the genuine care and interest for each one of the us.   And being treated as family by the amazing kids, Anna, Carrie and little Anthony.  Why wouldn’t  we followed Albert North as much as we could.  

Even though the above memory was almost 30years ago it is one of my fondest and long lasting and to me demonstrates perfectly the impact Tony and Connie had on the lives of “da boys” (Darrin, Mike, Matt, Wayne, Dave and Vic). 

I have been blessed by being a part of the extended Celli family and Tony will always remain in my memories.

Dear Connie and Family,
Learning of Tony's passing filled me with an abundance of emotion and flashbacks that brought back a flood of happy memories. I've known Tony practically my entire life. Working with him, for him and beside him allowed me at a young age, to see what a true leader looks like. He always exemplified loyalty, commitment and genuine interest in all that others did and I loved seeing that firsthand. The classroom was always a vibrant, enjoyable place to be when Tony was in front of it.
I live in Ottawa now with my own family and have shared stories about this Language teacher and soccer extraordinaire named Tony Celli. He has left an indelible mark in the lives of many, including mine and my family. I will always remember him as a positive influence, inspiration and a blessing in my life. It's not everyday that you get to know someone that embodies strength, wisdom, goodness and love. He reminds me of my father.

Signor Celli was a wonderful teacher and tutor when I was in high school. I took 3 years Italian with him at Sir James Dunn and I treasured those classes. I also treasured those moments outside of school hours to receive tutoring in French a few times, as well.

Just recently, I was telling my grade 6/7 Core French class stories about and shared by my favourite Italian teacher.  And, just prior to hearing about Signor Celli's passing,  as I was driving to school, I was thinking of him again wishing I had sent him a thank you note and his influence on my own teaching practice.  My class was saddened to hear of his passing and wished to say a Hail Mary both in French and English for him. 

He was truly a wonderful, kind and compassionate soul. God has gained a new angel.

I first met Tony when I was a young boy. My father coached the Marconi soccer team and I would go to the team practices and games with my father. Tony was a university student at the time and playing for Marconi and his vibrant and positive personality made an impression on me. In later years,  Tony was my Italian teacher at Sault Collegiate and I had the pleasure of playing soccer with and against him.  Tony left a big mark on everyone who got to know him and his contribution to soccer, education and the Italian culture in thus community will not be forgotten soon. I reached out to the guys and we reminisce about those days with with Tony and we marvel at his enthusiasm, passion and dedication. What a man!

What a preciously beautiful funeral. My memories of this 'great man' focus around his 'larger than life presence'.  Zio Tony, as he was lovingly called by my siblings and I, was a man of great wisdom, compassion, faith, but most of all LOVE. What I remember fondly was how he showed this love to his zias.. My nonna and zia Carrie were the blessed recipients of his selfless giving and affection, and it was evident in his attentiveness to them, that he simply adored them.  Zio, in our eyes, was always a beautiful  witness of God's love!!! ❤️

I had many years of interactions with him while working at CTV reporting and all were enjoyable.


Tony was so very thoughtful. I love how when we were all gathered at the table for a holiday meal, and the phone would ring, we knew it was Tony, Carrie's dad:) My nonno's face would light up and whoever answered the phone would get a big smile on their face and go around the corner and plug one ear to hear him better:). 

Such a positive, happy guy, who always made you feel so special. He gave his beautiful friendship to my nonno, which is priceless.

And what an awesome family he raised. 

You can tell by all the articles not only now but over many years, that he was sincerely loved and made such an incredible impact on  so many.

I was very sad to hear about the passing of Senior Celli. My deepest condolences to his family.
While it has been a very long time since Senior Celli was my Italian teacher at Sir James Dunn, I have thought about him often. I think I took his classes more to have him as teacher, than to learn the language. He was always so positive and smiled through even the toughest days. During times when I did not have stability or reassurance, he was the light in my day. I could always count on him to make me smile. While he probably did not know it, he played a significant role in my life and kept me going through difficult times. His joy for life and passion for teaching will stay with me always.
A few years ago, I dug out my old school notes from class so that I could brush up on my Italian before taking my first trip to Italy. I know he would have been proud to know that it was because of him, that I was able to converse with the locals.
I have now become a teacher myself and I hope to be that positive light in my students’ day.
I am honoured to have known him.

What an amazing family you are ..and how could you not be..Tony was the most incredible and caring person that was part of my parent's life..I know how much he cared for my father Rocco and the bond they had...I am sure it has already been re ignited..and they are already talking about all the soccer parties from the T&M days...Robert Direnzo and Linda Direnzo and family.




Signor Celli era il mio insegnante preferito. I still remember the "dad' jokes he told us. He was a great teacher, I was lucky that our paths crossed. Rest in Peace Signor Celli.

Mr. Celli was a wonderful teacher, who taught with a zest for learning. He was compassionate, caring and a dedicated individual. Rest in Peace.
