Francis Richard “Al” Allegretti, 81, of Savannah, Ga., passed away on July 28, 2014 at Hospice Savannah. Al was born on July 4, 1933 to Italian immigrant parents in Trenton, N.J., and was the quintessential American. In 1952, at age 19, while our country was in the midst of the Korean Conflict, he joined the United States Air Force and eventually served one tour in Vietnam before he retired in 1972. Of his military service, he often said, “I wouldn’t trade a minute of it.” Upon retirement Al and the love of his life, Florence Gruber Allegretti, returned to Savannah where Florence grew up. He continued his federal service as a Civil Servant employee at Hunter Army Airfield until his second retirement in 1990.
Renowned for his vitality and work ethic, Al slowed a bit in retirement. One of his favorite activities was the Hunter Retirees’ Saturday Morning Coffee Club. And, true to his American spirit, he kept busy with a variety of projects, including odd jobs, helping friends and neighbors, and volunteering at St. James Catholic School and Benedictine Military School. Most importantly he loved helping his children. When his kids asked for help, Al felt he could not help enough. He was a kind and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother who will always be remembered for his love of God, family and country.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Adelina Allegretti.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, Al is survived by three children: Debbie (Bernie) Moore, Frank (Darlene) Allegretti and Mike (Angie) Allegretti; his siblings; Josephine Masseroni and Richard (Ginny) Allegretti, grandchildren; Patrick (Valerie) Moore, Lauren Moore (fiancé Shawn Herrmann), Adelina Allegretti, Michael Allegretti, Brittany Davis; great-grandson Clayton Moore, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Special appreciation is sent to his nephew Martin Masseroni, who revisiting his journey, traveled it again with love and support.
Visitation will take place at St. James Catholic Church, July 30, 2014 beginning at 6:00pm with a Rosary at 7:00pm. A mass of Christian burial will take place on July 31, 2014 at 12:00 pm at St. James Catholic Church with internment at Greenwich to follow.
The family would like to thank Dr. Grant Lewis and staff at the “party room” of the Summitt Cancer Care for their extraordinary care and loving embrace.
