John Rudolph Tomat Sr.

John Rudolph Tomat, Sr., 87, of Savannah, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Memorial University Medical Center. A native of Savannah, he graduated from Commercial High School, retired from CSX Railroad and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific for 18 months. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Thorpe Tomat and Joseph Nestor Tomat; and brother, William Franklin Tomat, Sr.

In recognition of his athletic achievements, John was inducted into the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984 and served on the organization's Board of Trustees for several years and was a past vice president. He was enshrined in the Savannah Softball Hall of Fame in 1991, its inaugural year.

A devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, John is survived by his wife, Camille Pratt Tomat of Savannah; a son, John R. Tomat, Jr., of Columbia, SC; two daughters, Camille Muller of Savannah and Joan Barrett (William) of Bluffton, SC; three grandchildren, John David R. Muller, Jr. (Lisa) of Savannah, William F. Barrett, IV (Abby) of Spartanburg, SC and Ashley C. Barrett of Bluffton, SC; one great grandson, John D. R. Muller, III of Savannah; and many relatives and friends.

The family would like to especially thank Memorial University Medical Center, Dr. Adam Novack, Dr. Rebecca Sentman, Dr. Samuel Torres, Dr. Igor Aksenov, Dr. Ortelio Bosch and Dr. John Spellman and their staffs for their extraordinary care. In addition, John was extremely grateful for the love and support of his dear friends: William and Jean Remley, Delano and Eugenia Maurice and Tommy and Frances Cupstid.

Visitation will be at Fairhaven Funeral Home (Hodgson Memorial Drive) Saturday, August 24, 10:00 A.M. to 12 noon. Service to follow with Military Honors in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery at 12:30 P.M. with Father Mark Ross officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances be sent to Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.
