Kate passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 after a long illness. She was born August 4, 1925 in Ehrhardt, SC to James Benjamin Brown and Donie Ayer Brown. She was one of nine living children born into the family. She was predeceased in death by her parents, brothers, J.B. Brown and Aaron Brown and a sister, Adele Brown Cave.
Kate was educated in public schools in South Carolina and after her graduation from Olar High School moved to Savannah where she began a long career as a legal secretary. She worked first for attorneys Emanuel Kronstadt and Benjamin Silverman and later worked until her retirement for attorney Murray Galin.
Kate always had a love for music and from an early age enjoyed playing the piano and singing hymns. These talents became her gifts to her church and to her Lord. Kate was always an active church member. Upon moving to Savannah she belonged to Faith Primitive Baptist Church, later to Morningside Baptist Church and finally to Southside Baptist Church. Kate’s faith in God was instrumental in every aspect of her life.
Kate was the epitome of the “Southern Lady”. She was gentle, kind and loving. She took great pleasure in gardening and had pride in the beautiful azaleas and camellias that she nurtured throughout the years. Foremost she loved God and her family. Although Kate had no children of her own, she always helped to care for her many nieces and nephews as if they were her own. She leaves them with many wonderful memories. Her earthly presence will be missed by all who knew her, but her example of love of family and friends will remain in the hearts and memories of those for whom she cared. Never seeking self-gratification, she simply gave all she had to those around her.
Kate is survived by her sisters Bertha O’Hayer of Richmond Hill, GA; Banna Burke of Savannah, GA; Dorothy Lassiter (John) of Savannah, GA, Rose Manuel of Fairfax, SC, her brother Herman Brown (Leslie) of Ehrhardt, SC and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Southside Baptist Church on Friday, March 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. W. Allan Bosson, officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be before the service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Pallbearers will be: Del Brown, Jesse Manuel, Jack Cantrell, Bill Smoak, Scottie Harper, and Robert Miller.
Remembrances in celebration of Kate’s life may be made to Southside Baptist Church or to Hospice of Savannah.
