
Velma Lorene Woodard Hale, 86, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2013 at Buckingham South retirement community. Lorene was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Hale, Sr., who passed on May 7, 2013. The Eastman, Ga. native attended Berry College and Georgia Teacher’s College, retiring from the Chatham County school system after thirty-one years of teaching at Commercial High, Thunderbolt Elementary, and Jacob G. Smith elementary schools. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Temple, where she served with an adult literacy program.
She is survived by her son, Walter Hale, Jr. and two daughters, Joan Sagan and Julia Swindell, all of Savannah and four grandchildren, two great grand-children, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by brothers Edmond Woodard of Washington state, James Woodard, and Johnzelle Woodard and a sister, Berta Coursey, all of Eastman, Ga.
Viewing will be held Tuesday 12:30 pm – 1:30 at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel. Graveside services will be held Tuesday 2 pm September 10, 2013, her 63rd wedding anniversary, at Forest Lawn Memory Garden.
