Obituary

Ferdinand (Ferd) Felix Cameron November 20, 1944 – October 13, 2020

Ferdinand (Ferd) Felix Cameron passed away peacefully at the Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, on October 13, 2020 with his children Marissa and Mirabai at his bedside, and Melanie who joined via video from Yellowknife in the North West Territories. He was born on the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on November 20, 1944 and grew up with his parents and was the eldest brother to his eight brothers and sisters.

Ferd attended the Malik Roman Catholic School and later the Mount Saint Benedict’s College in St. Augustine, Trinidad and finally San Juan Secondary School. In 1968 he migrated to Toronto, Canada where he pursued a career in the print publishing industry. He later changed careers and became a successful real estate broker and then entered public service with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, where he spent over 20 years. He was also a founder member of the Caribbean Alliance Club (“Good Times”), actively involved in community work assisting where there was a need.

As a young man, Ferd had a keen interest in photography and cooking. He trained himself and became a very popular chef among his family and close friends, dishing up a wide variety of delicious Caribbean dishes. Always a fun loving and charismatic personality, he never missed an opportunity to invite friends over to his house and have a good “lime” (small gathering of good friends to enjoy some jokes, eat great food and have copious amounts of Scotch and other fine liquors).

When growing up in Mt. Lambert there was a term used by the young people of the day; “spreading joy”. It meant having a real good time, in a personal, selfish sort of way. Ferd’s life was a lot about spreading joy, yes, but it was a joy in which everyone was required to participate. The larger the crowd the better; addressing an audience, running a lime at his home, a family day, whatever. If there were people, Ferd was in his element. At the root of his dark moments, and we all have those, was always the fact that something was taking place over which he had no control and therefore could not work his customary magic.

Apart from the fun and joyous nature there was a part of him that was about deep caring and empathy for the unfortunate. Ferd went out of his way to maintain relationships with all his friends remembering birthdays etc. Two friends in particular, Kenneth Downes and Mr. Wright he would visit regularly bringing their favorite treats (“doubles” in the case of Kenneth) and even helping to feed him if necessary. These visits were not just a quick stop, Ferd would spend quality time doing what he did naturally and effortlessly, “spreading joy”.

Ferd is predeceased by his parents Inez and Bertie Cameron, his siblings, Cheryl and David. He is survived by brothers Garth, Brian and Henry and sisters Marguerite, Odette and Vivienne; Daughters; Melanie, Marissa and Mirabai; Granddaughter Cree and Great-granddaughter Nas; Pam Cameron and Carol Lewis and his friend and partner Paula Massiah. He leaves a large community of friends and other extended family across North America and the Caribbean. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. May his soul rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Memory of Ferd Cameron to Sunnybrook Foundation – designation to the Odette Cancer Center at https://donate.sunnybrook.ca/tribute.

BERNADINE MATOSAS
I have known Ferd for over 60 years. We first met through a relationship he had with one of my sisters and as our own friendship grew, he had the privilege to be the God father to my son, but most importantly, I had the privilege to be one of his best friends and he, mine.
Instead of talking about his many attributes like:
his sense of humour and his laughter or
his ability to listen and heal hearts - although he did break some because of the ladies man that he was - or about his devotion to his family, which meant everything to him
I would like to send him a personal message.

Dear Ferd,
I will never forget everything that you have done for me
Thank you for being there during my ups and my downs
Thank you for being my confidant
Thank you for being my partner in crime
Thank you for constantly teasing me and making me laugh
Thanks for always making me smile
Thank you for always being there for me without hesitation.
Loving you was so easy and having to suddenly say goodbye has created a pain so hurtful, that I don’t know how to move on.
I am left with this crushing absence because I knew the love between us was so sincere.
It’s an impossible reality to say my good friend has died
Our last goodbye was never said
So dear friend here goes-
Those special memories of you will always bring me a smile
The fact that you’re no longer here will always cause me pain and tears
But you’re forever in my heart
I will look for you always in the stars
Until we meet again
Good bye my special friend
I will always love you
Bernie Chrysostom Matosas

To the Cameron Family, please accept my condolences.
Melanie, Marissa, Mirabi, Cree and Naz, we love you all. We will always be here for you.

I was in shock when I got the sad news about Ferd. He was a very principled guy but loving and always smiling. I worked with him for many years and if he didn’t like something you would certainly hear about it!

As I’m writing this, I can see his smiling face. I will miss him as we would catch-up when we ‘bounce up’ at Walmart and Costco.

My condolences to his family and friends.

My condolences to all the loved ones. Ferd Cameron was like a big brother to me and an awesome one too. The memories of chatting, liming, and celebrating with him will never be forgotten. He will be missed indeed. However when I will think of him, I will smile. Rest in peace Ferd.

My condolences to the Cameron Family on Ferd's passing. Quite a shock it seemed. He was here, there and then gone. Ferd was class and charisma. In our earlier days, he ran things - he knew how to organize a lime. In later life, we did not often meet, but when we did we always smiled. Rest peacefully, my friend.

My condolences to the Cameron family. This is a grandson of Ferd's uncle. My grandfather, William, was the brother of Bertie. He met and married my grandmother Gertrude. They both lived and worked in Gran Couva, Trinidad.
We have been seeking to trace and connect with long-lost family and now a door has been opened. Hope to keep the door open.
Condolences again on behalf of the extended family here in Trinidad.

Ferd, what can I say... You were the epitome of what a friend should be! The news of your passing was difficult and brought me back to 9/11/01. It was then that Ferd and Henry took Kenneth to the hospital, and it was from that very day that he together with Vivian Manswell, have continued to be a major part Ken’s support system. Ferd our friend, we love you and will miss you. To your family and love ones, Ferd was the ultimate Gem. May “Eternal Rest Be Granted to Him, O Lord and Let your Perpetual Light Shine Upon Him. May he Rest In Peace Amen”.

Our most heartfelt sympathies,

Love Ruth, Kenneth and Kurt Downes
