Joe is survived by his wife Mary (Watson), children Elizabeth, Genevieve, Bernadette (Jim Weir), Martin (Lisa Hamilton), sister Cathi, grandchildren Jacob (Brittany and great-grandchildren Lyla and Grace), Meredith, Phillip, Kathleen, Colin, Elizabeth and Deanna as well as many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
Joe was very family oriented and treasured time spent with family more than almost anything. The only thing that came close was time spent at the family Cottage on Freddy Channel and all the better that he could visit with many extended family members while there. Joe loved to spend as much time as possible on the Freddy and was there almost every summer of his life.
He was born to Joseph and Kathleen (O’Meara) LeMoine of St. Anthony’s Parish, Toronto. Membership of the choir at St. Anthony’s School, and later the hockey team at St. Michael’s College initiated loyal friendships and connections with church choirs and hockey teams that lasted a lifetime. As a young man he rowed for The Argonaut Rowing Club, where he also took up squash. While rowing was not compatible with work and raising a young family squash certainly was and he introduced many people to the game. He continued to play both squash and hockey into his 70s. Memorably, he often said he would rather play hockey then watch the Stanley Cup final.
Joe graduated from York University after many years of night school. Working in sales during those years he often quipped that he studied at Queens, Western, Waterloo and many other universities in Ontario, having spent evenings studying in their libraries while on the road.
In 1980 he founded Renfrew Tape with colleagues Barry Shields and Herb Prance. Under their leadership Renfrew Tape became a worldwide leader in hockey tape. Joe retired from work in 1998.
Retirement allowed Joe to devote more time to another passion, the Terry Fox Run. Terry’s courage and determination was an inspiration to Joe and lead to him organizing and operating a local Terry Fox Run site for over 40 years and raising over $1 million for Cancer research.
The family thanks all the staff at Ehatare, where Joe spent his last few years, and Alexandra Sidorenko, who provided weekly in-home care for many years. A time and place for a celebration of Joe’s life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Terry Fox Run would be appreciated by the family.
