It is with sad hearts that we announce that Josephine (Jo) Gribben passed peacefully in her sleep early in the morning of October 11th at the age of 81, with her beloved husband by her side. She will be sorely missed, but lovingly remembered by John, her husband of 60 years, who had been devoted to her care for her difficult last five years of life, her children Brian (Lorraine), Lynn (Derrick) and Sharon (Jeff), her adored grandchildren Stephanie, JoJo, Shawna and Sarah-Lynn and her great-grandson, Ryan. Also missing her shining light will be her large extended family, each of whom she adored, her older sister, Elizabeth, who resides in the U.K, and her gang of wonderful friends with whom she shared many evenings at the condo BBQ and winters in Florida.

Josephine was born in Belfast, N. Ireland to John & Mary Megraw and was the youngest of a large family. She was pre-deceased by her parents and siblings Eileen, Etta, Gerald, Bobby, Willi and Sean.

In October 1966, Josephine made her way to Canada with Brian & Lynn in tow. John had made the trip six weeks earlier to find a job and a place to live. This was a difficult move for Jo because it meant leaving her parents and siblings behind, but she did what she had to do to make a better life for her family. Sharon was a happy and welcome distraction when she arrived 16 months later.

Josephine was always open to learning new things and usually ended up making a job of each. She worked in banking, bookkeeping and customer service over the years, but really met her perfect career late in life when she became a Real Estate agent for Family Trust Realty and then Royal LePage. She loved finding her clients their perfect home and then negotiating on their behalf.

Jo loved to be around people and hosted many parties over the years. The extended family functions were her favourite events - Boxing Day gatherings and the annual Family Picnics she hosted for many years have provided lasting happy memories for many generations of the Megraw/ Cassidy clan.

The family would like to thank the staff Rouge Valley Extendicare for the care and concern they showed Jo in the last three years of her life, and especially during Covid when she was separated from her family.

Due to Covid, there will be a small service held and shared on Zoom (a link will be shared with those interested soon). Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society can be made in Josephine’s name in lieu of flowers.

Though our lives seem to have grown in different directions as I got older, I will always look back with a fond heart on those moments where you took time away from hosting those memorable boxing day celebrations to share your art work with me. I will forever remember your kindness whether taking the time to listen to a young boys question or your generous gifts of encouragement and art supplies. Although only a small example of your kindness, I can only imagine what you may have considered to be only a drop in the bucket echoes across many of our lives and certainly adds up to be an overflowing sea of your kindness, you will be sadly missed and I appreciate and thank you.

Jo Gribben was a beautiful lady, and the only person I knew who could cook a prime rib roast to perfection, serve it at the scheduled time and have her 'spuds' ready to go with it. As we miss Jo, we will also miss those delicious dinners she and john served.
I will always remember the evening we were enjoying a BBQ, and Jo asked "Laura, John and I would like your permission to call you Mom" My response was, " Since I have known you for about 40 years, I would be honored and pleased to have you call me Mom" And so it began.
I'll miss the happy visits with you, as you sat in your bed and I had a chair beside you. We were laughing and giggling, as we talked
o f many good times together, and your life in Ireland.
We know that Jo will be missed by her wonderful family and numerous friends.
Now it is your turn to rest, my friend, as we think of you often and remember your beautiful smile, and all those joyous times together.
With love to the Gribben family, Laura Teatero

To Great John and the entire Gribben and Megraw families, I am so sorry for this loss.

Josephine was a such a huge influence on my childhood, and so many of my happiest memories growing up involve her at various family functions, or at the Gribben cottage in Buckhorn.

My deepest condolences to John, Lynn, Brian, Sharon and everyone who had the pleasure to know and love her. She was among the finest people I've ever known, and a giant figure in my life.

I know her later years were more difficult, so I hope this news may bring her and you all some peace, sad though it is.

She lived a full and wonderful life. And she will be missed, always.

Jo, we shared so much over our 50 year friendship, socializing, family vacations, cruising, and art classes. Memories we treasure. One aspect of your life that stands out was your generosity. You sponsored family and friends to Canada, helped underprivileged children and local charities, so we know you have a very special, well deserved place in heaven.
Thanks for the memories Jo, Love Marilyn and Bob

Few people can make you laugh every time you see them, Jo did that for me and I will never forget dinner at your cottage learning how to cook in the dishwasher.

Love YOUR Brad.
