May 10, 1926 – February 17, 2018
Anthony Pricoli passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the age of 91 following complications from spinal surgery.
Born in the Bronx on May 10, 1926, he was known as Tony to all, and as Gumpy to his friends in the neighborhood. He was the oldest of four children born to parents John and Susan (Marchitello) and is predeceased by his brothers John and Albert and his sister Joan. He was quite the athlete back in the day, and at 5 ft 5 inches and 120 pounds was a star of the local football team. In 1943 he joined the war effort and enlisted in the navy serving on the USS Gherardi.
Following discharge, Tony worked for many years as a letter carrier for the US Post Office. He also was an owner/driver of a yellow medallion cab. After retiring from the Post Office he worked for the Carvel Corporation for ten years. Later on he resumed his driving career, going to innumerable doctor appointments for various members of the family, nursing home visits, and the more than occasional tag sale and flea market. He could also often be found at his favorite place, Empire City. In 1956, he married Angela Mercado, whom he had met a party given by one of her friends. She had to pay one dollar to attend, which turned out to be the best dollar ever spent. Tony is survived by his wife, Angela, his children Louisa and Paul, and his grandchildren Connor, Bryan and Erin, of whom he was very proud.
