OBITUARY

Charles J. Rohrmann Jr.

Passed away on February 15, 2018

Charles Joseph Rohrmann, Jr., or Carl as all his family called him, died at the age of 76 after a long illness on Thursday, February 15, 2018, in the New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. For 39 years, he was a proud postal carrier and spent ten years after his retirement working at the Postal Union to help people. He was a totally unassuming, unpretentious person who was, in the words of the many people who knew and loved him, a generous, kind giving person who was filled with joy of life every single day and a limitless generosity towards family and friends. Carl was a member of both Mensa and the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry although these facts were known mostly to his family. He was a nationally rated scrabble player and relished both his friends at his Sunday night scrabble club and the kosher brownies the hostess, Judy, always served and the puzzles he shared with his friend Stan. He was an avid reader and read an outlined over 173 non-fiction books these past two years. Carl’s affection for his friends, his saltwater fishing buddies, his Saturday morning Pancake House breakfast with friends followed later that day by wings and chocolate cake at the Candlelight with his friend Tony, the Times crossword puzzle and Sudoku were activities he enjoyed. Carl worked on the Postal Retiree Luncheon, contributed to the Postal Newsletters as Director of Retirees and devoted hours to the exacting work of keeping track of the 50-years of service pins for fellow postal employees. But we will remember Carl most for his unselfish generosity and devotion to his family. Carl was the oldest of eight children and survived by his brothers, Eddie, Paul (his wife Dorothy), Donald, and his four sisters, Jane (her husband Bob Guild), Nancy, Rita and Martha (her husband Walter Szpur). Both his beloved brother-in-law Kemp Gregory husband to Nancy and his sister-in-law, Maureen (wife of Donald Rohrmann) predeceased Carl and are greatly missed. Carl was particularly devoted to his nephews and nieces: Rob Guild (Lori), Suzanne Guild, Amy Guild-Dorgan (Brian), Meghan and Brian Rohrmann, Nicholas and Tatiana Szpur, Alison and Matthew Gregory, Katie (Reynaldo) Rohrmann-Garcia, Christina Rohrmann and Nicholas and Tatiana Szpur. The family would very much like to thank the doctors and medical staff who took such wonderful care of Carl. Friends may call at the Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home, 824 Scarsdale Avenue, 10583 (914-725-1137) on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, from 2:00pm – 4:00pm and again that evening from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Wednesday, February 21 2018.
