1934-2020
Domenic Paul Gliatta 1934-2020. On January 7, 2020, Domenic passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family. A native of the Bronx, Dom was known to family and friends as “Bunyan”, “Bun”, “Sonny” and “Skippy.” He grew up in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx with his sister Rosalind “Roz” and his loving parents Charlie and Leanie. He graduated from Evander Childs High School and spent many days playing in the ultra competitive softball leagues at Evander where he held down third base for the Gun Hill Manor. Growing up and living the first half of his life in the Bronx, he regaled his kids and grandchildren with incredibly colorful stories of the neighborhood, such as watching Jake Lamotta train at Gleason’s gym, or attending almost every NY Football Giant game in the 1950s including the Colts Giants OT thriller in 1958. He was an ardent NY Yankee fan who saw every great Yankee team and star from DiMaggio to Judge. Watching a game with him to hear him analyze every play was a treasure. His love of sports was unmatched. One fine day in the summer of 1955, he met his true love Marilyn Falek at Orchard Beach. Later that night, he met her at Poe Park in the Bronx for a dance and their romance lasted for 60 years until Marilyn’s death in 2017 from ALS. During her illness, our Dad was a an absolute tower of strength who cared for her for several years in their home. Prior to retiring, he worked for 20 years for the Dept of Sanitation in the Bronx, where he retired as a foreman. In 1978, he moved the family to Yonkers where he was very fond of all of his neighbors. Despite the move, he still kept in touch with his childhood friends Charlie Amato, Mixie and B. Carl. In retirement, he enjoyed following his favorite NY teams which were the Yankees, Giants, Knicks and Rangers. He loved Italian food and having big Sunday dinners with his children Stephen (Sonia), Paul (Melissa) and Michelle. He also loved attending the games and events for all of his grandchildren (Christina, Nicholas, Matthew, Mary, Charles, Amanda and Madison. He also had two great grandchildren (Isabella and Gianluca). A prodigious reader and news junkie, he followed and would discuss any political issue that affected the country or his beloved NYC. He will be sincerely missed for his unconditional support of the family and common sense advice that was doled out always at the right moment. Rest In Peace.
