
Donald is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marie Bartnett. He is also survived by his children Anne Bartnett (Frank Valdez), Janine Bartnett, Karen Bartnett (Walter Straus), Kevin Bartnett, and his grandchildren, Sam, Alex, Ellie and Tatiana, his sister Pat Bartnett of Chatham, MA and his brother Gerald Bartnett of Springfield, VA.
Donald was born in the Bronx and raised in New Rochelle, NY. He and his wife moved to Scarsdale in the late 1950s.Donald attended New Rochelle High School. After graduating from high school, Donald enlisted in the Merchant Marine Academy. A short time thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a chaplain’s assistant in the army of occupation after World War II in Europe. After returning from Europe, Donald attended Notre Dame University and graduated in 1950. He did graduate work in Economics at Syracuse University.
Donald had an acumen for numbers and worked in the accounting departments of several companies. He specialized in the petroleum industry and work for Shell Oil Company, Butler Aviation and Petro Fuel. Donald volunteered for the YMCA and spent many years coaching his daughter’s basketball team. Donald enjoyed spending time in Cape Cod and in his cottage in Bridgton, Maine. Donald was an avid reader and particularly loved reading about history and politics. He was always ready to have a discussion about global issues. Donald loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, always eager to lend a helping hand.
Donald had multiple health issues over the years and displayed perseverance, optimism and courage while facing them. His strong desire to live and love of family kept him alive far longer than any doctor imagined. He will be missed deeply by all who loved him.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, April 11th at 10am at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Scarsdale, NY. There will be a viewing at Bennett’s Funeral Home, Sunday, April 10th from 5-7pm. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or the American Heart Association in Donald’s memory.
