Helen C. Effler
December 20, 1920 – June 16, 2018
Helen Corry Effler, aged 97, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2018. She was born on December 20, 1920 in Manhattan to Maryann and Andrew Corry, both originally from County Clare, Ireland. Helen grew up in Riverdale, NY and attended Saint Margaret’s, Walton High School and Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School.
Helen married Arthur C. Effler on June 10, 1944. After being stationed briefly on Whidbey Island during World War II, they lived on Long Island for several years. In 1954, they moved to the Green Knolls neighborhood of Eastchester, NY where they raised their two children, Steve and Kathy. Helen lived in Green Knolls until 2012.
Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was primarily a homemaker, but had worked as a secretary, copy editor and librarian. Helen was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. A talented cook, she and her late husband, Arty, routinely hosted parties (which often involved a cappella singing of Irish music). She delighted in trips to the ocean and would take her children and nieces to Jones Beach in her convertible on hot summer days. Helen loved swimming at Lake Isle, Notre Dame football and a strong cup of tea. She was famous for her Irish soda bread and her chocolate chip cookies.
She is survived by a son, Stephen (Deborah Carroll) Effler of Rye Brook, NY; a daughter, Kathleen (John) Marvin of Santa Barbara, CA; five grandchildren, John (Caroline) Marvin, Jr., Denver, CO; Christine (Alexander) Setness, Scarsdale, NY; Dana (Nicholas) Noppinger, Denver, CO; Dr. Kathleen (Brendan McCorkle) Effler, Swarthmore, PA; and Matthew (Ashlee) Effler, New Fairfield, CT. Helen is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Kiera and Caitlin Setness; Claire, Catherine and John Marvin, III; William Noppinger; Victoria Effler; and Liam McCorkle. A ninth great-grandchild, baby girl Noppinger, is expected in July.
Helen was preceded in death by Arthur, her husband of 47 years, and her three siblings Mary Freer, John Corry and Vincent Corry.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Friday, June 22 at Bennett Funeral Home in Scarsdale, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday, June 23 at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scarsdale, NY. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Westchester, 1025 Westchester Avenue, White Plains, NY 10604.

THOSE WE LOVE DON'T GO AWAY,
THEY STAND BESIDE US EVERY DAY,
STILL LOVED, STILL MISSED,
BUT ALWAYS NEAR,
My Heartfelt Condolences to
Steve and Debbie, Kathleen and John
Helen was a great lady and I have many great memories of all Family Parties! I do remember, at one of the gatherings, Helen gathered all the little girls around her and taught them how to crochet.
All of you are in my thoughts and prayers>
