OBITUARY

Jane R Cody

September 23, 1921November 3, 2019

Jane Rita Cody, 98, died peacefully November 3, 2019 in Birmingham, Alabama. She enjoyed a wonderful, long and full life. Jane was born on September 23, 1921 to Charles and Eva Belle Cronan in New Orleans, Louisiana. She adored New Orleans- it was part of her spirit and she loved to go back and visit and to tell stories from her time growing up there. She was part of the Greatest Generation - joining the Navy as a young women in her 20’s and serving as a Wave during World War II and the Korean conflict. She met her husband, John J. Cody, also a World War II veteran, at the Pensacola Naval Base. They were married for 62 years until his death in 2014. They moved to New York City after their marriage and then moved to New Port Richey, Florida with their young family. Jane was a devout Catholic and devoted decades to supporting the parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace in New Port Richey. She was a founding member of the St. Vincent de Paul Court of the Catholic Daughters of America and served in many leadership roles including Regent and State Officer several times. Jane and John were always particularly supportive of charities for veterans and active military. They were extremely proud that three of their children also served our nation as officers in the Army and Marine Corps. She and John loved their many friends and clubs in Florida but had a great passion for traveling and visited numerous continents and countries over the years —well into their 80’s. In addition to traveling she loved champagne, shopping, great restaurants, red lipstick and every occasion with her family! After John’s death, Jane moved closer to family in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and then Birmingham, Alabama. Although she had lived independently till she was 93 she embraced these changes with tremendous good spirit, humor and strength. Jane was the proud mom of four loving children: John (Janet) of Old Lyme, Connecticut, Eva Snowden (William) of Birmingham, Alabama, Anna Carpenter (Mark) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Arthur (Stacy) of Ridgewood, New Jersey, nine grandchildren - Sean Cody (Caitlyn), Kristen Zumba (Nick), Jane Vines (Brannon), Andrew and Hilton Carpenter, Jennifer Rohlfs (Carl) , Emily, Patrick and Ryan Cody and four great grandchildren- Pippa Zumba, Jack Cody, Connor and Cayleigh Cody. A family funeral mass will celebrated on November 9, 2019 and she will be interred with military honors at the Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Westchester, New York. Jane was very beautiful in both body and spirit and will live on in her family’s hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Gary Sinise Foundation or Catholic Charities.

I knew no one when my husband and I moved to Holiday, Fl. Luckily we moved next door to Jane and her family to await our first child, David. Jane was always there for me, always kind, and Anna later babysat for David. She was a wonderful person. Nancy Welling

Mrs. Cody was one of my favorite people. She certainly had a heart for hospitality, adventure, and FUN! Many afternoons we would share a snack and just talk about the day. A cheerful, "Hello, Dear!" would always greet me. My memories of her will always make me smile, and I will miss her much. She made my life richer, as well as those of many others. Her family is precious and I enjoyed getting to know them. What a legacy to be proud of! Here's to seeing you soon in your trademark red, Mrs. Jane. I'll bring the coffee.

I fondly recall occasionally driving Jane and Jack home from the Suncoast 10-13 meetings due to darkness and it made them feel better about going to the meetings knowing we’d be there for the ride home. A lovely and sweet lady and though Jack and I shared the camaraderie of being retired Law Enforcement Officer, Jane seemed to enjoy our discussions as well. R.I.P. Jane and may God hold you in his loving arms for all eternity. I know you are now with Jack again continuing your wonderful lives together and now in God’s presence.
