Janie Katula Daggett Dodoo, a resident of Yonkers, NY passed away on Saturday November 12, 2022. Janie was born January 1, 1938, in Hemingway, SC, the fifth of twelve children born to the union of Emerson Daggett and Katula Sampson.
After graduating from Chavis High School she went on to study nursing at college in Southern Florida. After college, she moved to New York City and worked as a nurse at Bellevue Hospital. Although passionate about nursing, her true dream was to “see her name up in lights” and actively pursued a career in acting, modeling, and dancing while living in NYC. Her dream paid off and shortly after moving to NYC, she was discovered by a modeling/talent scout and was sent to Germany to perform in shows at various resorts throughout Germany's Black Forest. She gained popularity throughout Europe in the 60s as a model and dancer and performed at famed venues like The Moulin Rouge, and modeled for magazines like Harper's Bazaar.
While in Europe she was introduced to Benjamin Dodoo, a medical student at Lausanne University, through a mutual friend. Janie and Benjamin quickly fell in love and wed in 1970. They decided to leave Europe and settle in the US, choosing suburban New York as the location to build a family and life together. They first lived in Yonkers NY where, in 1973, they welcomed their first child, Benjamin Dodoo, Jr . They then moved to Scarsdale NY in early 1979 before the arrival of their second child, Jan Dodoo.
When Janie had Benjamin Jr, she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Janie excelled at propping up members of her family and supporting them through the many passions and of their lives. We will miss her greatly!
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband Benjamin Dodoo. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: Emerson, Jr., Thomas, Wilander, Stoney, Harry, and Samuel and sister: Nellie Wright.
She leaves to mourn her son Benjamin Dodoo, Jr., White Plains N.Y. and her daughter Jan Dodoo, Brooklyn N.Y. and her grandson Andy Travers, Sleepy Hollow N.Y. Her sisters: Elsie Daggett, New Castle, DE, and Daisy (Ollie) Buckner, Marietta, GA. Her brothers: Joe Nathan (Rosa Lee), Effingham, SC, and George, Florence, SC. and a host of friends, nieces and nephews.
