Lol’s career, and much of her life, revolved around the written word. After a long career as an editor and revisor, focusing on books for younger readers, she turned to writing books for that audience about a wide range of topics, from archaeology and anthropology to health and the law. She revised a highly regarded series of First Books on the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Rome, Greece, Mesoamerica and South America. Her book AIDS How it Works in the Body, published in 1992 was one of the first to explain the illness to a younger audience and dispelled many myths and misconceptions of the time. She co-authored a compilation of profiles of archeologists, Digging into the Past, which inspired a new generation of archeologists. She also co-authored a book for adults, The Circumcision Decision: An Unbiased Guide for Parents, which won a national parenting book award in 2013.
Lol graduated from the University of Rochester and held a masters’ degree in publishing from New York University. A passionate, and wide-ranging reader and active book club member, Lorna was also devoted to the visual arts, music, and theater. She and her husband of 63 years, Ronald, traveled throughout the world, often with friends or family, especially enjoying their journeys to far-flung sites of archaeological interest.
Lorna is survived by Ron, her children Alissa and Lawrence, and five grandchildren. A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations, if desired, should be sent to Reading is Fundamental (www.RIF.org).
