Born on April 30, 1931, to Leonard and Anna Macchia Sicilian, in the Clason Point section of the Bronx, Marie was a compassionate advocate, educator, and activist who dedicated her life to her faith, family, and profession.
Marie is survived by and will be greatly missed by her Sister-in-Law, May Sicilian, and many nieces and nephews.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents Leonard and Anna Sicilian, her husband, Frank Traetta, her siblings Margaret, Frances (Dominic Savino), Dominic (Adrienne), Charles (May-living), Joseph (Elaine), Michael (Phyllis), and a niece Adrienne Hunt.
Marie strove for excellence in all of her endeavors and set a high bar for the generations that follow.
Marie was a graduate of Cathedral High School and graduated as Valedictorian of the Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing. While working, teaching, and attending night school, she earned a BS and two Masters degrees from Columbia University. She earned a PhD in Education from Fordham University in 1985.
She was the epitome of a caring, sensitive, intelligent woman who was willing to fight for what she believed was fair and right.
Her only flaw in her sterling character was a paranoia of the insect world. This is illustrated by a story recounted by several family members who were left stranded on a busy thruway when a bee entered the car window, and she, as the driver, stopped the car, bolted, and left them to deal with their own fates. “Bold” backyard bunnies were also one of her nemeses.
She will always be remembered for her spirit of adventure, love of Sacred Heart Parish, Leisure Club outings, “nature” walks, and romps through the casino.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Memorial Sloan Kettering at Harrison for their care and compassion.
The family has requested that those who will be attending the funeral services please wear a mask.
