
Martha Jeanne Frey passed away on March 20th, 2015 at Calvary Hospice, Bronx, New York after a long illness.
She was born on October 23rd, 1929 in the family home in Youngstown, Ohio. She was a daughter of Joseph Baytosh and Mary (née Svirloh) Baytosh, who emigrated to the United States from Slovakia in the early 20th century.
Martha was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 40 years Dr. Donald John Frey, and all nine siblings: Mary Ann, Katherine, Anna, Helen, Andrew (Louise), Christine (late Andrew) Yank, Dorothy, Geraldine (Thomas) Balog, and Joseph Jr. (late Gayle). She is survived by her son, Eric Bach Frey and daughter-in-law, Lise Rebecca Minovitz, of Eastchester, New York; her brother-in-law Thomas Balog of Youngstown Ohio, her sister-in-law Louise Baytosh of Warren, Ohio, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Martha graduated from St. Matthias Parochial School and Ursuline High School (class of 1947) in Youngstown, Ohio. After graduation, she moved to New York City to live with her sisters Mary Ann and Helen, work, and attend Hunter College. Later, Martha and Helen shared an apartment in Brooklyn, NY. Martha was a trained cosmetician and for many years was a buyer for several drugstore chains and independent drugstores in New York City and Westchester County.
On June 22, 1958, Martha married Donald John Frey in St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville, New York. In May, 1964, Martha left the workforce to become a full-time homemaker and (in 1965) mother. They lived in various locations in Westchester County (Yonkers, Hastings-on-Hudson, South Salem, and Scarsdale), Manhattan, and Queens. They moved to Whitehall, New York to retire in 1986, where Martha resided for 25 years. In 2011, Martha moved to Eastchester to be closer to her family.
Martha was a devoted wife and mother, who took excellent care of her husband, son, and home. She enjoyed travelling to places such as Montreal or Toronto with her family, hosting dinner parties, gardening, crafts (knitting, sewing, and crocheting), doing crossword puzzles, and reading.
Calling hours will be from 8:30AM to 10:30AM on Wednesday March 25, 2015 at Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home, 824 Scarsdale Avenue, Scarsdale, New York. A mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday March 25, 2015 10:30AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 9 Strathmore Road, Scarsdale New York. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
