Mary Lee Hartzell (née McPhillips) lived in Scarsdale since 1963, and raised a family of six children. She was born in New York December 22, 1931, the 2nd of four children of Michael and Leontine McPhillips. She grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens and Pt. Lookout, Long Island. In July, 1954 she married Andrew C. Hartzell, Jr., and they moved from Cleveland, Ohio, to Scarsdale in April 1963, and together they raised their family in their home in Edgewood. Mary Lee was an accomplished watercolorist who exhibited and sold paintings in Scarsdale and Pt Lookout. She was a graduate of Vassar College, and held a Masters in Family Counseling from Iona. During her sixty years in Scarsdale she taught at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and worked as a counselor at Iona. She also worked extensively in the Immaculate Heart of Mary parish program to supply United States military forces deployed overseas. Mary Lee died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on the evening of Tuesday, December 5, 2023. She is survived by her husband Andrew, her brother Michael, her six children Neil, Harijiwan, Leontine, James, John, and Peter, her 14 grandchildren, and her 3 great grandchildren.
The wake will be at Bennett Funeral Home, 824 Scarsdale Avenue, Scarsdale, NY Friday December 8, from 4pm-7pm. The funeral will be at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 8 Carman Road, Scarsdale, NY, on Saturday, December 9, at 10:00am, with burial to follow immediately afterwards at Gate of Heaven cemetery, 10 W Stevens Ave, Hawthorne, NY 10532.
A family celebration for Mary Lee will follow at Shenorock Shore Club, 475 Stuyvesant Ave., Rye, NY 10580. All are welcome.
