Matthew Slattery

Matt is survived by his wife, Dympna (né​e Honan)​; his brothers, Patrick (Mary) and Michael; his nephews, Andrew, Mark, Matthew, and their wives, as well as Marcus, steward of the family farm. Matt is also survived by his many, many nephews and nieces from the Honan Clan as well as a wealth of friends. Being a steadfast family man, he treated each and every niece and nephew as if they were his very own.

Matt is preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Margaret, his step-mother, Kathleen, his brother, John and his sister-in-law, Joan, his sister, Margaret, and his niece Marguerite.

Matt was born in Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland on March 19, 1942. He graduated from St. Mary’s College, Galway.

Matt immigrated to the United States in 1964. In 1965 he began a long career as a telephone technician for Ma Bell in its regional company, New York Telephone, then the 1996 spinoff, Lucent Technologies (which includes Bell Labs) and its own spinoff, Avaya Inc. in 2000.

Early in his career, he took a temporary pause to serve his adopted country. He joined the Army in 1965 where he proudly served as a fully committed member of the 82nd Airborne. He was honorably discharged just in time to meet the love of his life, Dympna, at a City Center dance at the end of 1967.

His one true passion was golf. And this passion poured over into his founding and involvement with Innisfail Golf Club of Westchester where he served several positions including treasurer and president. He was also actively involved in the Ancient Order of Hibernians in White Plains.

A true Irishman, Matt never shied away from the dance floor. He enjoyed a good chat with a keen interest in politics, a quick wit and a sharp sense of humor. He was also a very good and respectful listener, whether it was listening to the hopes and dreams of the younger generation or the opposite position in a political discussion. His strong faith and deep respect for the Catholic Church were the twin pillars that carried him and guided him throughout his life.
